Bought this car in 1985 from a fellow in Redmond, Washington who had had it for about five years but whose dream to restore it had faded. I thought I could pick up the torch, so I bought the car.

When I bought it, the car was fully assembled. My plan was to completely disassemble it (done), have the body fully restored (not done), restore the pieces and parts bit by bit myself (sporadically done), and reassemble it (not done). But time and money have kept me from fulfilling that goal and space keeps me from hanging on to the dream.

This auction is for a 1965 Jaguar E-Type roadster, which has been in Washington State since 1967 (I don’t have the history before that). The car has a 1965/62 body, a 1965 engine (the 3-carb SU setup) and drivetrain, and a 1965 (or so) bonnet. By way of explanation, after I started the disassembly process, I discovered that this car had once been two: the front end of a 1962 and the back end (and engine and drivetrain) of a 1965. The tub is welded somewhere between the firewall and the rear bulkhead. And when I first got this car, it had a 1962 bonnet on it. I sold that bonnet and finally purchased a Series I bonnet that was proper for a 1965 (the one that is shown here).

In addition to the body and bonnet shown, this auction includes the original 1965 engine (with the 3-carb SU setup and bearing the serial number above), along with all of the parts I removed from the car, most of which I bagged and tagged for identification. Obviously, many replacement parts will be needed if they can’t be restored. To complete the conversion into a full 1965 E-Type will require at least the later braking system (I have some 1965 brake system components that are included here), along with a replacement radiator and fan(s). Of note is that the dash was retained from the 1965 (it is not the aluminum type).

This wonderful matching numbers example was originally delivered to Jaguar Cars, New York and has more recently been repatriated to the UK in February 2019. Since being imported this E-Type has undergone a comprehensive restoration and as such is offered in superb condition. Finished in British Racing Green with tan interior and green Mohair hood, this E-Type is simply stunning from all angles and it is easy to see where the superlatives emanate from. During the restoration, this E-Type was converted to right hand drive. The body was stripped to bare metal, repaired where necessary and resprayed in the resplendent British Racing Green paintwork it wears today. The engine and gearbox were extensively overhauled by marque specialists, Rushton Engineering at a cost of £14,742. Also present are invoices from E Type specialists totalling circa £30,000. The work undertaken includes a full retrim with new hood and hood frame, re-chroming of the brightwork and the fitting of new wire wheels, amongst various other works.

Accompanying the car is a sizeable history file containing many invoices and photographs detailing the restoration, the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, and the current UK V5 registration document. This is a very well-presented car that has done very little mileage since the restoration and is ready to be enjoyed by its new custodian.
