In 1965, Charles Lee Becker, president of Handy Andy, a grocery store chain based in San Antonio, Texas, celebrated his success by ordering a new E-Type Roadster. Completed on July 7, his car was finished in Pale Primrose Yellow with beige upholstery, a Fawn soft top, and a black hardtop.

Mr. Becker collected his E-Type in Coventry and enjoyed it for five years, driving the car almost 30,000 miles. In November 1970, he sold the Jaguar to Harold Richardson, a fellow San Antonian who served as the E-Type’s faithful custodian for the next 34 years. Mr. Richardson kept a detailed logbook dating from 1970 through 1984, when the E-Type was parked with just 40,737 miles. The car remained in storage until his passing in 2004, whereupon it was sold to the consignor, a collector with a passion for unrestored sports cars. In his care, the Jaguar was returned to running order and has benefited from sparing use. Today, the car possesses the unmistakable characteristics of a well-kept, unrestored E-Type. The chassis, engine, and body numbers match the accompanying Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, and the consignor reports that the car retains most of its factory paint finish, as well as its original soft top, Triplex glass, Girling shock absorbers, stickers, and chalk marks. The sale includes the tool kit, jack, and owner’s manual, as well as Mr. Richardson’s logbook.

A three-owner, low-mileage Series I E-Type is an incredibly rare find – one worthy of serious consideration.

In late 2019, the Roadster was entrusted to Jeff's Resurrections – a Pebble Beach winning and multiple 99 and 100-point JCNA marque specialist to inspect, service and prepare the Jaguar for its next caretaker. The object was to lightly freshen, both cosmetically and mechanically, with attention to authenticity and originality. The largely original paint and body was cleaned, polished and perfected, complemented by new rubber gaskets throughout the exterior of the vehicle. The car's original upholstery was retired in place for correct matching carpeting, seat and arm rest material – while preserving the remainder of the cabin's trim, all electronics were sorted as well as the cooling system and ignition components with concours-correct replacement leads and associated parts. All fluids and filters were replaced with new, followed by Michelin XVS tires. Over $18,000 invested.

1E11252's chassis, engine, and body numbers match the accompanying Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, and retains most of its factory paint finish, as well as its original soft top, Triplex glass, Girling shock absorbers, stickers/decals, and chalk marks. The car is also complete with tool kit, jack, and owner's manual, as well as Mr. Richardson's logbook.

Upon the recent completion of the commissioned service, Jeff Snyder logged a report of the vehicle noting his observations and notions of originality.

I first looked at the car in 2004 in San Antonio when second owner's family was selling the car. I distinctly remember by the location of the aerial.

This 1965 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was ordered new by Charles Lee Becker, president of San Antonio-based grocery store chain Handy Andy. Mr. Becker took delivery at the factory in Coventry, and sold the car to fellow San Antonian Harold Richardson in 1970. The car was driven until 1984, stored until being purchased by a Texas collector in 2004, and acquired by the selling dealer in 2019. Power is from a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and the body is finished in Primrose Yellow with a fawn convertible top and beige leather interior. A November 2019 refreshment by marque specialist Jeff’s Resurrections of Taylor, Texas included new carpets, seat upholstery, tires, ignition components, and more. This XKE is offered with a black removable hardtop, registration documents from the first two owners, a handwritten mileage log, recent service records, a Jaguar Heritage certificate, and a clean Texas title.

The car is finished in Primrose Yellow with a Fawn convertible top and a black removable hardtop. The front left portion of the cowl was refinished due to a crease caused by the driver’s door, and included paint meter readings show thicknesses between 3.0-6.5 mils across most body panels, with an 11.0 mil thickness shown in the repainted area. An included condition report from Jeff’s Resurrections states that the rear body tag is intact in the license plate recess and shows factory-style inverted paint runs. The seller had the car detailed, including a four-stage process on the paintwork, light polishing of the brightwork, and spot-cleaning the convertible top.

The seals for the convertible top, hood, bumpers, headlights, and taillights were replaced in November 2019. Chrome 15” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-off nuts and wear 185-section Michelin XVS tires with 2018 date codes. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard rear rotors. The front calipers were rebuilt and new front hoses installed in 2019.

The cockpit was fitted with new carpets, beige leather seat upholstery, and lap belts in November 2019. Additional features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, toggle switches on the dash, and a Blaupunkt tri-band radio.

Smiths instrumentation consists of a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a five-digit odometer showing just under 41k miles.

The 4.2-liter inline-six features dual overhead camshafts and triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower with 283 lb-ft of torque. A PerTronix ignition module has been added to the distributor. Work performed in 2019 included replacement of the exhaust headers, spark plugs, ignition wires, crankcase breather hose, header tank, air filter, brake master cylinder, and underhood hardware.

The cylinder head, engine block, and chassis numbers are pictured above and correspond to those shown on both the data plate and the included Jaguar Heritage Production Record Trace Certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission that carries number EJ3781 according to the condition report, which also notes the presence of factory-style Girling shocks and replacement exhaust components. The underside was professionally steam cleaned in preparation for sale.

The sale includes manufacturer’s literature in a vinyl folder as well as the tool kit, keys, jack, and binder of documentation shown in the gallery. A handwritten maintenance log covers from 1970 through 1984 at 40,737 miles. Early registration documents list the car as a 1966 model, though its production record and current Texas title indicate 1965 as the production year.

The Jaguar Heritage Production Record Trace Certificate shows the original colors, equipment, and driveline numbers as well as the name of the original owner. A two-page report from Jeff’s Resurrections details condition as of November 2019.
