Lot #212976
This 1966 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster was built on October 14, 1965, and dispatched to New York later that month. The current owner acquired the car in Virginia in 1981 and drove it to Massachusetts, where the vehicle is said to have been used sparingly until it was placed into storage in 1987. From April 2018 to October 2024, Enfield Auto Restoration of Enfield, Connecticut, conducted a refurbishment that involved stripping and repainting the car in Opalescent Golden Sand, renewing the Light Tan leather upholstery, replacing the Sand convertible top, rebuilding the 4.2-liter inline-six and the triple SU carburetors, reconditioning the cylinder head, resealing the four-speed manual transmission, patching the floors, and overhauling the vehicle’s suspension, braking, electrical, fuel, and other systems. Modifications include an aluminum radiator, PerTronix electronic ignition, a Bell stainless-steel exhaust system, and halogen or LED exterior and interior lighting. This XKE OTS is now offered on dealer consignment with refurbishment records and photos, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, a user manual, a spare-parts catalog, other manufacturer’s literature, a car cover, and a clean Massachusetts title.
Finished from the factory in Opalescent Golden Sand, the car had been repainted in green at some point in the past. The photo above shows the vehicle early in the restoration process. Nearly 70 pages of records from the refurbishment—mostly from Enfield Auto Restoration—are presented in the photo gallery below.
The front and rear floor pans and the inner rocker panels were replaced, as were the hanging and picture frames for the hood. A number of inner and mounting panels were fabricated during the build as well. Martin Robey Group supplied replacement body panels, and the front frame rails came from Welsh Enterprises.
The body was disassembled, stripped, media-blasted, and returned to the current shade of Opalescent Golden Sand from late 2022 to early 2023 using paint formulated by Glasurite. Equipment that was replaced or renewed includes enclosed headlights, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, clamp-on dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, and a top boot.
The Sand-colored Stayfast soft top was replaced in mid-2024, and it has a fabric inner liner from BAS Jaguar Trim.
Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with 185/70 Vredesein Sprint Classic tires; a matching spare is located in the trunk compartment. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard rear rotors. The brakes, suspension, and steering were overhauled during the refurbishment. The front wheel bearings were adjusted in May 2024.
The bucket seats have been rebuilt and reupholstered in Light Tan leather supplied by BAS Jaguar Trim, which also was the source of the color-coordinated door panels and carpeting plus other cabin materials. Interior appointments include a leather-trimmed center console as well as lap belts, black vinyl dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, and a heater. Two Jensen 9” speakers have been installed, but a receiver is not currently present.
The renewed wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located at the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 67k miles. Approximately 6k miles have been added under current ownership, with about 200 of those coming after completion of the refurbishment. LED dashboard lighting has been adapted, and the instrumentation was reconditioned.
The trunk compartment is trimmed in materials from BAS Jaguar Trim.
The 4.2-liter inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower and 283 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt and balanced by Eastwood’s Auto Machine of Somersville, Connecticut, in late 2018. Other work performed during the refurbishment included the following:
Reconditioned cylinder head
Reconditioned intake and exhaust manifolds
Rebuilt SU carburetors
Rebuilt fuel system
Rebuilt starter
Replaced water pump
Installed aluminum radiator
Replaced overflow tank
Replaced cooling-system hoses, lines, and Cheney clamps
Replaced fan motor
Replaced wiring harnesses
Installed PerTronix electronic ignition
Replaced alternator
Installed battery from Shield Batteries Limited
Fitted Bell stainless-steel exhaust system
The radiator fan was rebuilt and the timing was adjusted in April 2024.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a full-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission. The gearbox was resealed and the clutch was replaced during the refurbishment.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers, and it also documents that the car was built on October 14, 1965, and was dispatched to New York on October 27.
