This 1965 Jaguar XKE is a Series I fixed-head coupe that was built on June 21, 1965 and distributed through Jaguar Cars of New York, before being purchased by its first owner, Mr. Theodore Stelmach, in order to be displayed at Jaguar Clubs of North America concours events. The car remained with Mr. Stelmach until his passing, and was eventually sold by his family to a neighbor in November 2014. It was acquired from the neighbor in February 2015 by the selling dealer, who had a $17k mechanical refresh completed out in May 2015. The car is finished in Carmen Red over black leather and is powered by its numbers-matching 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six, which is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. This Series I XKE is now offered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with its original set of owner’s literature and pouch, factory tool kit and jack, Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Nevada title.
The seller states that the car has not been restored, and 16 paint meter readings showing depths of between 4.0 and 6.5 mil. A few small dents are present on the driver-side cowl. Screws were placed in the front license plate holes and painted to match the body by the original owner, while four holes were added around the grille opening for badge display.
Chrome 15” wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and wear 185-series H speed-rated whitewall tires that were mounted in 2015. AMCO wind wings were added by the original owner, as were a set of AMCO chrome bumper bars that are included in the sale.
The interior retains the factory trim specified on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, with black leather over the seats, console, and dash, along with matching carpeting. Additional features include a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a wooden shift knob, and black Jaguar Hickok lap belts with 1964 date codes. Various JCNA show badges were added to the console by the original owner, dating back to its first JCNA outing at Lime Rock in 1965.
Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 23k miles, approximately 300 of which have been added by the seller. Black trim covers the center dash face, which houses additional gauges and toggle-switch controls.
The 4.2-liter inline-six features dual overhead camshafts and triple SU carburetors. The latter were rebuilt following the seller’s acquisition, and additional work carried out at that time included cleaning the fuel tank and fuel system, re-coring the factory radiator, replacing the fuel filter housing and radiator header tank, and fitting new cooling hoses. Closeups of the factory Champion spark plug wires are included in the gallery below. The heater box was chrome-plated by the original owner, and a polished finish was added to the air cleaner housing.
Original engine number 7E4606-9 is shown stamped on the block, and is also on the cylinder head. Both stampings match the engine number listed on the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate.
Aftermarket ANSA tailpipes and resonators that had been installed by the original owner were replaced with correct factory style tailpipes and resonators during the 2015 servicing. The remainder of the exhaust is reported by the seller to remain in factory configuration. A brake system refresh was performed following the seller’s acquisition and included rebuilding the calipers and installing a new master cylinder, slave cylinder, and servo.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate lists the original colors and component numbers, as well the build and dispatch dates. Invoices showing over $17k of work in 2015 are included.
The factory tool kit is included in the sale, as are a jack and knock-off hammer. Also included is the original warranty booklet, warranty registration, maintenance chart, and distributors and dealers list in a factory clear-window pouch. The car was featured in the seller’s column in the September 2015 issue of Road & Track magazine, and a framed copy of the article is included in the sale.

"I agree lots of things don’t make sense. This is truly an irreplaceable car. Not another one like it. And it sold today for just about $100k less than I was offered for it in the past. I’ll probably see it in the postwar preservation class at Pebble in the future and puke, too ;) But, again, when it is time to sell no point in messing around. At least that’s my opinion. Represent the car honestly, show it in detail, listen to the market and hope it finds a good and caring home. "
