Auction description:

1966 Jaguar E-Type

Colour Silver

Odometer 83,386 Miles

Engine size 4200

Location Gloucestershire

Country United Kingdom

• Comprehensively restored

• 100 miles covered since

• Stored in car cocoon

• Fully recommissioned and ready to be enjoyed

This example, a Series 1, 4.2 litre 2+2 fixed head coupe, was delivered new to Richard Bellamy, Jaguar distributor, in Grimsby in July 1966. The original green buff log book records three further owners while the MOTs show that it had covered 72,900 miles by 1975. It is thought to have covered a further 10,000 miles before being parked up some time in the late Seventies.

It was purchased as a restoration project by the owner of a body shop who set about a comprehensive project to bring it back to the condition that it is in now. One of a collection of six that he restored, the transformation was fully documented and included a full engine rebuild and a number of upgrades as follows:

• Kenlow fan

• Light Alloy Flywheel

• Dayton deep dish chrome wire wheels

• Full stainless steel exhaust

• Upgraded high-torque starter/ alternator

• Halogen headlights

Since completion in 2005, it has covered only 100 miles on a return trip to a wedding and has otherwise been stored in a car cocoon. The collection has now been disbanded to free up some funds and so it’s been fully recommissioned and is now up for auction.

The Paperwork

Accompanying the car is a small file of paperwork which includes the aforementioned green buff logbook, a collection of old MOT’s and a set of receipts relating to the restoration process. This includes those for many new parts and an invoice for the engine rebuild which, although totalling over £2,000 at the time, is surely a small fraction of what it would cost today.

The V5 is present and the car is MOT exempt, though it did go through the test following the restoration process.

The Interior

There’s no doubt that there is a technique for executing an elegant entry and exit over the wide sill but it doesn’t take too much practice and, once inside, you’re rewarded with one of motoring’s great views out over the louvred bonnet. The dashboard is also a minor work of art in itself, with Smiths dials and a neat set of toggle switches controlling the major functions and, of course, a lovely wood rimmed steering wheel to top it all off.

The dash itself is a little patinated but, crucially, everything works as it should and the leather dash top matches the rest of the upholstery and is in fine condition. The driver’s seat is a little more creased than the others but the leather throughout is soft and supple and, with a fresh set of carpets, it feels top class.

Up above, the headlining shows a few indentations but is clean and secure while in the back, the boot is very clean and tidy and houses the original toolkit. It’s also surprisingly practical as the rear seats can be neatly folded forward to extend the luggage area.

The Exterior

Make no mistake, this car is a real head-turner. Although this is now an older restoration, a combination of careful storage and what was clearly a high quality job in the first place mean that the bodywork on this car is extremely well preserved.

The paintwork shows only a few tiny marks: a small crack at the back of the bonnet, a tiny scratch on the nearside front wing and a couple of very small bubbles on the filler cap. It has to be said, though, that you really have to go looking to see the imperfections; overall it’s very well presented.

The chrome work is also holding up well and, although there’s some light patination here and there, the major chrome areas such as the bumpers still shine up well. The wheels are unmarked and come shod with a set of tyres that have plenty of tread remaining and, although they are of an age that means they might be hardening a little, the fact that they are winters means that they should be a softer compound which may help to mitigate that.

Reflecting the lack of use since its restoration, the underside is remarkably clean and has been thoroughly coated in sealant. Overall, it’s a car which is going to make its next owner rightly proud.

The Mechanics

Much like the underside of the car, tilting forwards the bonnet reveals a pristine engine bay. It starts first time, every time and has the signature Jaguar straight six sound, which is a thing to be savoured. On the road it picks up well and is smooth through the gears. Selecting reverse takes some technique but that’s a characteristic rather than a flaw and, just like getting in, easy with practice. On a less than smooth route, there are no untoward noises from the suspension or drivetrain and the brakes pull the car up straight. In summary, it’s ready to go and, in some ways, it seems a shame that it hasn’t had more use since its restoration.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
