Lot No: 137A
1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I Lightweight Low-Drag Competition Coupe
Coachwork by R S Panels
Registration no. PRE 796F
Chassis no. 1E78508
The elevation of the GT class to Manufacturers’ Championship status for 1963 prompted Jaguar to develop a small batch of very special lightweight cars to challenge Ferrari. The steel monocoque tub and outer body panels were
re-manufactured in aluminium and the engine dry-sumped and fitted with Lucas mechanical fuel injection, producing in excess of 300bhp. Just 12 of these cars were built by the factory for the use of competition-orientated Jaguar dealers or specially selected private entrants. Two of them, campaigned by Peter Lindner (Jaguar’s Frankfurt distributor) and Peter Lumsden, were fitted with a revised, low-drag tail section devised by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, the man responsible for the standard production E-Type. Sayer’s low-drag bodywork also featured on Dick Protheroe’s ex-works experimental racing E-Type. Sadly, the Lightweight E-Type failed to fulfil its potential in the endurance classics, though the car did prove able to take on and beat the Ferrari GTOs at shorter distances. Today, copies of this rare competition variant are among the most popular and sought after of E-Type replicas.

One of three constructed by world famous Jaguar specialist Brian Wingfield, this Series I E-Type wears elegantly streamlined coachwork modelled on that of the works, low-drag, lightweight competition coupés. It is not a direct copy of one of the factory lightweight cars, but a mixture of their styles plus Brian’s own ideas. Commissioned by a titled British collector, it cost £160,000 new and has seen little use.
A 1967 left-hand drive 2+2 coupé was used as the donor vehicle and converted to right-hand drive in the process. The floorpan, bulkhead and transmission tunnel are steel, the rest of the body is made of aluminium. Constructed to Brian Wingfield’s design by R S Panels, it incorporates a V12 E-Type front screen and is finished in gunmetal grey. The interior is luxuriously trimmed in fawn suede and a rear roll cage fitted.

The engine is a very powerful 4.5-litre road/race unit with billet steel crankshaft, Weber twin-choke carburettors and tuned-length, fabricated exhaust manifolds. Gearbox is a five-speed Getrag unit. The brakes are large ventilated discs gripped by modern 4-pot alloy calipers, while the wheels are of the late-type, square-holed, lightweight ‘E’ pattern. Completed to a very high standard, the car is presented in perfect condition throughout, having seen very little use since completion.

Since being acquired by the present owner last year, the car has formed part of a significant collection on the west coast of North America.

Estimate: £70,000 to 100,000

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
