Lot 47

1970 Jaguar XKE Roadster

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Selling on Saturday

CHASSIS NO: 1R13488

• A full rotisserie restoration presented in excellent condition

• Upgraded with a six-speed Synchromesh manual gearbox

• Gorgeous wood and leather interior with bucket seats and air-conditioning

• A great candidate for spirited driving, rallies and classic tours

4.2-litre V-6 engine, 264 HP, six-speed Synchromesh manual gearbox, fully independent coil spring suspension, four-wheel power drum brakes; wheelbase: 96”

This fine 1970 E-Type was rotisserie restored and is presented in wonderful condition throughout, remaining very much as it left the factory years ago, with a few modern exceptions. Finished in British Racing Green accented by brilliant brightwork, the paint finish is outstanding. The car rides on Michelin radial tires mounted on spotless knock-off chrome wire wheels. The bodywork is spot on, with excellent panel gaps throughout, that cool louvered hood, and all the emblems, chrome, and polished trim are exceptional. The tightly fitting cloth top is like new and is also equipped with a top boot to protect it while in the down position.

The interior is trimmed in black leather with Smiths instrumentation and those cool rocker switches adorning the wood dash. This Jaguar is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, bucket seats with headrests, and seat belts. A new black convertible top and roll-up windows provide protection from inclement weather. Everything from the door panels to the carpeting is accurately presented in great condition.

Retaining its original engine, the twin-cam 4.2-litre straight-six delivers excellent power with quick throttle response provided by dual Stromberg carburetors. The engine is backed by an upgraded six-speed manual gearbox which shifts smoothly through the gears and gives this car an amazing top end. Turn the key, hit first gear and hang on, as this is far quicker than your average E-Type. The engine bay remains clean and correct, and the undercarriage is also remarkably tidy, evidence of the careful use this car has enjoyed. The E-Type is accompanied by a huge file of receipts and documents, as well as a photo documentation of the restoration process.

The E-Type remains one of Jaguar’s most iconic road cars, a model that finds its home in some of the most discerning collections throughout the world. Consistently on top of every classic car “Best Ever” list in the world, these second series 4.2-litre E-Types are universally regarded as the best driving of the entire E-Type series. In classic British Racing Green livery, this example is ready for its next chapter, either in a British car collection or out on the open roads.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
