55,000 MILES, ON EBAY 05/08, DEALER WRITES: This 1971 Jaguar XKE Series III V12 Roadster is British Racing Green with a Cinnamon Interior and Black Everflex Soft Top. This three owner matching numbers Series III V12 Roadster, with only 55,201 original miles, is in excellent original factory condition. This is the 64th Series III XKE Roadster produced. The very early Series III XKE Roadsters feature 10:1 compression ratio (9:1 on later cars) with less smog equipment, so they produce more horsepower. The second and third owner kept the car maintained with the same XKE expert, Brooklands Engineering, in Connecticut. As a result of its proper and meticulous maintenance the car is an absolute pleasure to drive with the engine providing plenty of power and the transmission shifting very smoothly. The original and unmolested factory paint is in excellent condition. The chrome, wire wheels, convertible top, and interior are all in beautiful original condition. The books and detailed service records are included with the sale. We challenge anyone to show us another XKE in such virginal and factory original condition.

SOLD DATE Wednesday, Jul 5th 2023

Vehicle Location Boulder, Colorado previously Greenwich VIllage, New York

This 1971 Jaguar E-type Series Roadster features the classic combination of British Racing Green over Biscuit leather with a tan convertible top. He reports buying from Cooper Classics Ltd—a longtime Hemmings dealer partner—in New York City in April 2009. He had it delivered to his home in Colorado and says he has driven the sports car “once or twice a month for 10 to 15 miles, depending on the weather,” adding less than 3,000 miles in total. He believes that the Jag had two prior owners New York State. The car is a Jaguar Clubs North America award winner, he states.

The car is presented as original and well preserved, and the seller indicates $15,000 of documented maintenance and service during his ownership. Key services are detailed below. He says the car “runs great” and indicates the leather seat coverings as something a new owner might want to replace.

Jaguar rated its 60-degree, 5.3-liter V12 at 276 net horsepower at 5,850 rpm and 301 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm in the 1971 E-Type Series 3 when new. The owner says that the Jaguar’s engine is original. To start, the seller says, “Pull the choke, foot off the gas pedal, and the car will start quickly even in the winter in an unheated garage.” The seller reports steady maintenance and upkeep for the engine, including a complete overhaul of the four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and choke cable replacement in June 2022 at a reported cost of $3,800. He also reports replacing the radiator with a larger model and having the gas tank cleaned and rebuilt in 2009. Further, he says all hoses and belts were replaced in 2014, and the fuel pump was replaced in 2017. The four-speed manual transmission is said to “shift smoothly” through all gears.

The seller reports about a “dozen dings and paint chips” and “many” in the undercarriage. “Most of these blemishes will only be seen upon close inspection,” he says. He reports replacing the black soft top with a tan top in March 2018 and affirms it does not leak, and that he has kept the top up while the car was garaged. He reports “flawless” glass and “excellent alignment” for the hood, doors, and trunk lid, with no leaks observed. “There does not appear to be any significant rust anywhere on this car,” he says. All lighting is working properly, and the headlamp switches were replaced in 2017, he states.

The leather seats show considerable wear, but the seller says there are no holes or tears. Seat adjustments are “fully functional.” The wood-rimmed steering wheel is affirmed to be original to the car and shows a signature carved into one of the aluminum spokes. He describes the carpeting as in “excellent shape with several parts being new.” The interior trim is said to be intact, though the seller notes that the center console black plastic cover has started to “flare” at its base. The heat works, and all gauges, switches, and dash lights are functioning properly, he states. The Kenwood AM/FM/cassette stereo was installed in 2002 and is noted as still working.

The seller reports that there has been no work needed on the vehicle’s suspension in the past decade, and that bushings and shocks are in “good shape with no leaks.” The Pirelli P4000 tires were installed 20 years ago and should therefore be replaced for a safe ride at speed. The 15 x 6-inch center-hub-locking 72-spoke wire wheels, which were an original option for this car, are described as “solid, with no vibrations noted up to at least 80 mph,” the seller reports. The power steering is working properly, with no leaks, and the four-wheel disc brakes are functioning as designed, he says. The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Colorado title in his and his wife’s names. Additional paperwork includes service records dating back to July 1994. Wearing a color combo perfectly fit for a classic British sports car and powered by a V12 engine, this 1971 Jaguar XKE Series 3 Roadster is presented as ready to roll, with perhaps only a need for new tires.
