This 1972 Jaguar XKE is a Series III roadster that was built in August 1972 and acquired by the seller in 1989 from the widow of its previous owner. Finished in dark green over beige leather, the car is powered by a 5.3-liter V12 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Additional features include quad Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, four-wheel disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension, chrome wire wheels, air conditioning, and a Kenwood CD player. Service performed four years ago included installing a new battery, correcting electrical issues, and replacing various hoses and lines. This XKE is now offered with an owner’s manual, jack, service notes, and a clean Illinois title in the name of the seller’s company.
The body was repainted in dark green by the previous owner. The left fender was refinished in 2012, at which time the car was color sanded and buffed. A new beige soft top was fitted in 1990, and a matching-color boot cover is included in the sale. Additional exterior features include chrome bumpers, a rear luggage rack, US-market side markers, and quad exhaust outlets.
Chrome 15″ wire wheels are secured by three-lobe knock-offs and wear 205/70 Dunlop SP50 tires that were manufactured in 2012. Power-assisted disc brakes feature inboard-mounted rotors out back, and the car is also equipped with power steering. The four-wheel independent suspension incorporates torsion bars up front and coil springs out back, with tubular shock absorbers and anti-roll bars at each end.
The cabin was reupholstered in 1990 and is trimmed in beige leather over reclining bucket seats and door panels. Features include a black dash fascia and console, rubber floor mats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and tan inertia-reel seatbelts. The air conditioning vent assembly was removed and repaired in 2016, and various interior switches, controls, and lights were also addressed at that time.
Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer and 7k-rpm tachometer, as well as gauges monitoring voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The center dash also houses a Kienzle clock and rocker-style switchgear, and a Kenwood CD player has been added in the upper console. The five-digit odometer shows 51k miles, about 3k of which have been added over the last three decades.
The 5.3-liter V12 features overhead camshafts and four sidedraft Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. A new AGM battery was installed in 2016, and other work performed at that time included replacing two carburetor sync vacuum hoses and a fuel line, as well as repairing wiring issues. A cold start and footage of the engine running can be viewed here.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Borg Warner three-speed automatic transmission. An area of the driver-side floorboard was repaired in 2016 using fiberglass and POR15, as were rust holes in the corners of the storage area behind the seats.
