This 1971 Jaguar XKE is a 2+2 coupe that was sold new by Tyler Imported Motor Car Co. of Farmington, Connecticut and later spent time in Kansas before it was moved to South Carolina in 1991. The seller acquired the car there in 1998 and has since added approximately 16k miles. Finished in Pale Primrose over tan leather, the car is powered by a numbers-matching 5.3-liter V12 paired with a four-speed manual transmission. In 1999 the manual gearbox was installed in place of the factory Borg-Warner automatic, and in 2012 the engine and manual transmission were rebuilt, the engine bay was refinished, the suspension was overhauled, and the steering rack was replaced. This Series III XKE is now offered in North Carolina with 1971 sales paperwork, factory books and manuals, records from the current and previous owners, removed air-conditioning components, a car cover, and a clean South Carolina title in the seller’s name.
The car was delivered new in Pale Primrose, and the seller believes that it was previously partially refinished because the hood and the cowl do not match perfectly. The seller also notes blistering on the roof, and a portion of the right rear valance has been cut out and repaired due to rust. Touch-up work has also been performed, and a crack is noted in the lower portion of the windshield.
Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels are mounted with Pirelli P4 tires. The seller states that the suspension bushings and steering rack were replaced in 2012, although a leak from a seal in the replacement rack is noted.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench with tan leather upholstery. The matching tan carpeting has been fitted with aftermarket mats. The seller notes that the air conditioning was not connected after the engine was rebuilt; the removed A/C lines will accompany the car.
A three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a black dashboard with plastic switchgear. Factory Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and an analog clock and other auxiliary gauges in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 39k miles, approximately 16k of which have been added by the seller in more than two decades.
The 5.3-liter V12 was rebuilt from 2011 to 2012 following a head-gasket failure. The cylinder heads were also machined and the valves were replaced along with the chain tensioners. The engine compartment was also disassembled and refinished at that time, and a larger radiator was fitted. In 2018 a stainless-steel exhaust was installed, and service in spring 2020 included changing the oil, flushing the radiator, and filling the Stromberg carburetor dashpots. The seller notes that the engine sometimes has trouble with hot starts.
The engine-block stamping reads 7S4091SA, which matches the number shown on the data plate affixed to the firewall.
When the seller purchased the car it had an automatic transmission, and in 1999 the factory transmission was discarded in favor of a four-speed manual gearbox, with work performed by British Performance Cars of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 2012 the manual gearbox was rebuilt by City Transmission of Asheville, North Carolina.
Sales paperwork indicates that the car was sold new by Tyler Imported Motor Car Co. of Connecticut in November 1971 for $9,141.30. Factory equipment listed includes tinted glass and air conditioning, while the dealer added an AM/FM radio and undercoating. Factory manuals and various records are also included.
