1970 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 2 4.2 ROADSTER
A well-maintained example of Jaguar’s elegant roadster; offered from cherished 18-year ownership.
Under the bonnet sits a 4.2-litre naturally aspirated inline-six, producing around 265bhp and 283lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
A bare-metal respray was carried out in 2005, and the car comes with a superb history file dating back to 1970.
While the car has a US specification ‘2R’ chassis number, it was initially delivered and registered within the UK prior to export to North America. It was later re-imported to the UK from the US.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
This car is finished in Regency Red and has a black convertible soft top and a black leather-trimmed interior. There is a wooden-rimmed steering wheel and wood gear knob.
Originally registered in the UK, the car was subsequently exported to the US and was registered in Oklahoma. It was then re-imported to the UK in the early 1990s.
It is accompanied by a significant history file documenting its time in both the US and the UK.
CONDITION
There is no known prior bodywork damage.
A respray was carried out in 2005 to address imperfections in the paintwork, and today the Regency Red finish in still in very good order, with only minor imperfections.
There is a small hole in the outer skin of the soft top, and some slight fading.
The condition of the original black leather interior is described as fair, with some creasing and surface wear to the seats commensurate with the car’s age and mileage. There is a small hole on the rear of the driver’s seat, and a few imperfections on the upright bolster, plus minor wear to the cabin trim elsewhere.
There are no known mechanical or electrical faults, save for two inoperative dashboard lamps. While the Lucas electrics are known to be temperamental, the seller reports that any occasional fault is usually easy to fix.
Due to the car’s age, it is exempt from mandatory MOT testing. However, the most recent MOT test was carried out on 6 July 2017 at 92,544 miles, when the car passed following attention to the horn, headlamps, stop lamps and windscreen washers, with an advisory for the front brake pads wearing thin.
SERVICE HISTORY
Most recently, an engine oil and filter change was carried out, as well as the fitment of two new engine mounts and a 123Ignition electronic distributor.
When the oil and filter change prior to this was performed, a high-output starter motor was also installed.
The car has been regularly maintained by the seller’s partner, who has many years of experience with Jaguar cars. This has included tuning the carburettor, greasing all relevant points, and replacing the anti-freeze and coolant.
SUMMARY
This is a smart and very usable example of Jaguar’s striking classic sports car, offered for sale in good cosmetic and mechanical order, benefiting from a bare-metal repaint in 2005. This eye-catching E-Type Roadster would make a strong addition to any collection of iconic cars, and it is sure to delight as a stylish cruising companion for many more miles to come.
