Tom Haddock (E-type restoration guide author) writes in the July '80 issue of Ejag magazine that this car has been entered to his register of early cars.

The owner of this car wrote a question in the 8/76 edition of Ejag magazine asking about the date of mfg. The motor# of R2542-9, body# of R2378 were given. Owner Ken and Jan Evans, Florida, USA.

Current bid $7,600, reserve not met 5 bids, 6 days left in auction. 48k miles.

    Sellers description:
1961 Series l RHD Roadster with Hardtop, with the flat floor and welded in bonnet (hood) louvers but not the external bonnet latches.

It left the factory in Nov. 1961 and was first registered on Jan. 24, 1962. The mileage shown is documented and believed to be correct.

I bought this car in May, 1970 and ran it until December, 1977. I had the car repainted shortly after buying it. I think that it was probably not completely dry when the filler and finishing coats were applied because after a few years the paint started cracking and then large pieces started lifting off. That is why I parked it in 1977. It was running well at that time, but that was 29 years ago! Although it has always been garaged, it will need a complete rebuild. The only reason that I am selling now is that I have finally admitted that that is something I will never do! I don’t want to start a rebuild and not be able to finish it.

A previous misguided owner removed the original air filter and installed trumpets on the three SU carbs. I have since purchased a filter/canister and the large plastic elbow that fits on top, (these are included.) but I do not have the piece that goes between that elbow and the carbs. I believe this is the only part that is missing. The small header tank behind the radiator is a replacement brass item, but I have an original, which is also included.

The numbers on the plate on the right side of the engine compartment are:
    Car #: 850259
    Eng. #: R 2542 – 9
    Body #: R 2378
Gear Box #: EB 166 JS
The chassis no. near the top of the right front shock is 850259.
The engine no. is recorded as R 2542 – 9 and this is the number at the front of the cylinder head. However, the number on the block above the oil filter appears to be 1842 – it is difficult to see below the carbs. I don’t know anything about the car’s life before I bought it, so I am not guaranteeing matching numbers. I can see no indication that the car has ever been in an accident.

In 1976, I bought a wrecked 1964 E-type roadster to save it from the scrapyard and also to get the hardtop, which is included in this auction. (The soft top is still installed.) I don’t know if the hardtop was available in 1961, but it looks great on the car. Any other parts salvaged from this wrecked car which I did not sell at the time are included in this auction (Too numerous to list, but I think they include just about everything needed to convert to LHD.) as well as various other parts I have collected over the years. Also included are a Jaguar shop manual, several E-type restoration books and other literature, a new pair of silencers (mufflers) and a replacement hood (top) kit. I think that this came from JCWhitney. It does not appear to be of very good quality but can serve as a good pattern.

The car has been stored on axle stands. Four of the five tires still hold pressure. I have fitted a new tube in the other one. An additional new tube is included.

The car is in Pensacola in northwest Florida and can be inspected at any time by appointment. It is being sold “as is”, so I recommend inspection prior to bidding.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
