For sale at Brightwells auction 23 November 2016
www.brightwells.com/classic-motoring/auctions/classic-vintage-november-2016/cata ...

No reserve

Bodyshell only

The RHD Roadster you see here is number 413 and thus among the first 56 to have the new recessed footwells which made the car much more comfortable to drive. Built on 27th February 1962, it retains the straight bulkhead behind the seats that the first 526 Roadsters had before the recessed bulkhead was introduced in May 1962 to increase seat travel and legroom.

As the accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms, it was originally cream with a black interior and was the only one of 258 Roadsters made for the French market to be supplied in RHD (see 'Factory-Original Jaguar E-Type' by Anders Ditlev Clausager, page 17). It was first owned by Princess Nina Aga Khan who acquired it through Jaguar distributor, Delecroix of Paris. An extremely glamorous and high profile character, she was just the sort of owner Jaguar were keen to attract.

Born Nina Sheila Dyer in February 1930 to wealthy British parents who owned extensive property in Sri Lanka, Nina was blessed with stunning good looks and when she was still a teenager she left Sri Lanka for London where she took up acting classes, basing herself in an elegant flat in South Kensington. With her aristocratic bearing and high cheek bones, she soon came to the attention of the fashion industry and took up a career in modelling, moving to Paris at the age of 20 where she became the top model for couturier Pierre Balmain.

Mingling with the wealthiest jet-setters at the hottest social events, she soon caught the eye of billionaire Baron Hans Heinrich von Thyssen, heir to the vast Thyssen steel and armaments empire and the richest man in Europe with one of the finest art collections the world has ever seen. Despite being already married to Princess Teresa von Fuerstenberg of Austria, von Thyssen became besotted with Nina and took her as his mistress, lavishing her with gifts which included expensive sports cars, millions of pounds' worth of jewellery, two black panthers and her own Caribbean island where she scandalised the media by sunbathing nude on the beach. Naturally this did not go down too well with Princess Teresa and the couple were soon divorced, allowing von Thyssen to marry Nina in June 1954.

Unfortunately, the marriage did not go too well either with both parties soon taking other lovers (of both sexes in Nina's case), and they were divorced after just two years, Nina walking off with a cool $2.8 million, a sprawling French chateau and vast amounts of jewellery (including the famous three-strand Black Pearl necklace that was specially made for her by Cartier and was last seen in 1997 when it was sold at a Christie's auction in Geneva for almost $1m). Nina continued to have scandalous affairs, famously taking her two black panthers everywhere she went, much to the astonishment of onlookers and at considerable cost to herself as the two wild cats had a habit of ripping apart every fancy hotel suite she stayed in.

One of her affairs was with Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, a fabulously wealthy member of the Persian ruling elite who was the son of Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan III and claimed direct descent from the Prophet Muhammad. Educated in Europe and America with homes in Switzerland and Paris, he was not only a famous art collector with a vast and priceless collection of Islamic paintings and manuscripts, but also a senior diplomat with an influential role in the United Nations and UNESCO. A bit of a playboy in his early life, his affair with Nina quickly blossomed and in August 1957 they got married in Switzerland, Nina converting to Islam and taking the name Princess Shirin Khan.

As with von Thyssen, Aga Khan showered Nina with gifts and yet more spectacular jewellery, including the famous 'Panther Set' that was specially made for her by Cartier. He also gave her the E-Type Roadster you see here which she collected from Delecroix of Paris in March 1962, just one year after its launch, her British ancestry accounting for the fact that it was the only right-hand drive Roadster ever ordered new for the French market.

But despite all the gifts, again things did not work out. With his heavy UN work commitments and her modelling career, the newlyweds barely saw each other and Nina was soon back to her philandering ways, the couple finally separating after just five years of marriage. Once again Nina walked off with a vast divorce settlement including $1.4 million in cash and yet more jewellery.

By this time, although Nina was still young, beautiful and filthy rich, she was also desperately unhappy. "People have described me as intriguing but nothing is further from the truth," she once said in an interview. "All through my life luck just fell on me without me lifting a finger. It just happened that the great things in life have become mere daily life for me".

With two failed marriages behind her, no children, a flagging modelling career and barely any real friends, she retreated to her Caribbean island taking her beloved black panthers and her E-Type with her. But she could not settle nor shake off her depression and she returned to France where her luck finally ran out for good: on 3rd July 1965, she committed suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills.

After her death there was a scramble to get hold of Nina's jewellery, some of which, including the famous Panther Set, mysteriously disappeared on a flight from Paris to Hong Kong where it was due to be exhibited. Despite a worldwide search involving Interpol, no trace of the jewels could be found and it wasn't until the mid-1970s that the Panther Set was finally located, hunted down by Cartier's own dogged detective.

As for the E-Type, that too disappeared from view and it was presumed lost for ever, long since eaten up by the lush vegetation of the Caribbean. However, by a remarkable stroke of good fortune, a gentleman from London happened to hear of an old car in storage on the south of the island while he was on holiday in Jamaica last year. He duly went to see the car, liked what he saw, a deal was struck and it was soon on its way back to the land of its birth. It was only after he applied for a Heritage Certificate that he realised the car was no ordinary E-Type and had such a fascinating story to tell.

As you can see the car is still in basically sound condition thanks to years spent in the hot Jamaican sunshine, although sadly everything removable has indeed been removed over the past five decades, and the shell has clearly received some rather amateurish welding at some point in the past. Crucially though, the original chassis number is still clearly legible on the front cross member of the picture frame so getting a V5C for the car should not pose a problem for the new owner, this process being greatly eased by the Heritage Certificate and the 'all duties paid' HMRC import documents which accompany the car.

A truly exciting find with a gripping tale behind it, this extraordinary, long-lost and very early 'Aga Khan E-Type' will cause a huge stir when it is finally returned to the road where it belongs, and will doubtless open many doors to the fortunate new keeper should they choose to exhibit the car on the show and concours circuit. Being offered here at no reserve, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not to be missed - so bid vigorously now or kick yourself for your hesitancy hereafter...
t may interest bidders to note that this car will be displayed at the NEC Classic Car Show from 11th - 13th November on the SNG Barratt stand in Hall 2. They can supply virtually all the parts required to restore the car, including a 3.8 engine and gearbox.

The remaining original parts which belong to this particular car we’re in the Caribbean with ‘Jaguar of Puerto Rico’. Many years ago these were acquired and amassed in a collection of parts which we purchased from a Dr on the island. Several years ago we handed the dealership back to Jaguar as no longer viable. In 2014 we sold the entire collection of cars & Jaguar parts to Mark Snowden of Northernjaguar.com.

As this started off as a bodyshell only from 850413 [and still is] ,ie no engine or gearbox to quote serial numbers from ,

The JDHT heritage certificate from October 2016 pre auction has [numbers not supplied ] blank entries for the engine ,gearbox and body numbers , then in January 2017 the numbers have been added-- may i ask where this information has come from ? and what the rebuild intentions are regarding the serial numbers ? .
