For sale at Hofmann's in UK
www.classicdriver.com/en/car/jaguar/e-type-si/1961/426051

Seller's description :

The E-Type Jaguar replaced the hugely successful Jaguar XK150 and debuted at the 1961 Geneva Motorshow. Built between 1961 and 1974 the E-Type proved to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Designed by William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer the "Series 1" was launched in both fixed head coupe and roadster form with a lot of design inspiration taken from the Le-Mans winning D-Type sports racer. The E-Type was built around a steel monocoque chassis with independent suspension mounted on detachable sub-frames, it used coil spring and dampers to the rear with torsion bars and wishbones to the front. Brakes were Dunlop discs all round, mounted inboard to the rear alongside the differential to reduce un-sprung weight. Powered by Jaguar's XK 3.8 litre twin-cam, straight-six engine derived from the XK150S, producing 265bhp. This offered breathtaking performance to rival both Ferrari and Aston Martin at a fraction of the cost. In the hands of motoring journalists the car not only recorded a top speed of 150mph but achieved a 0-60mph and 0-100mph in 6.9 and 16.2 seconds respectively. The Series 1 is instantly recognisable by its glass-covered headlights (up to 1967), small "mouth" opening at the front, signal lights and tail-lights above the bumpers and exhaust tips exiting under the number plate to the rear.

The Jaguar E-Type Series 1 "Matching Numbers" 3.8 Fixed Head Coupe offered here at Hofmanns is chassis number: 860078 finished in Opalescent Silver Grey with full Red leather interior. This very early example was originally distributed through Ashton Preston Garages, Preston, Lancashire on 18 December 1961 and registered as "RRN 5" to be their demonstrator on 1st January 1962. Having passed through several owners, 860078 was purchased by Barrie Tickle of Purley, Surrey in 1976 who then undertook a full nut and bolt restoration. Works included; Cutting out and replacing where necessary any corroded panels including sills, floor pan etc. prior to a bare metal re-spray in Signal Red. Then a full mechanical overhaul commenced including; complete engine rebuild. Attention then passed to the running gear where everything was checked and overhauled as required, this included; Original Moss Gearbox, Axle, Braking system, Cooling system and a full re-wire. The interior underwent a total re-trim in Red leather. Barrie then continued to enjoy the car travelling to various shows and events until it had further cosmetic and mechanical re-fresh in the late 1990's. Barrie continued to enjoy 860078 spending whatever was necessary to keep the car to the highest possible standard and was often seen showing her at Jaguar Drivers Club Concours d'Elegance. Barrie finally parted with her in 2015 when he part exchanged her against a pre-war classic car. RRN5's current owner, who had been searching for some time for a matching numbers early series 1 E-Type, subsequently purchased 860078 and has enjoyed the car ever since. He decided the car would benefit from being returned to its original Opalescent Silver Grey. Whilst the car underwent a full bare metal re-spray the decision was made to re-build the engine and give it a full mechanical overhaul. This thorough, recent restoration ensured the car is presented in pristine condition and has travelled less than 1,000 since the works were concluded.

Offered for sale due to the owner being posted abroad with work. I would describe this as the nicest E-Type I have ever driven with the best panel fit. This immaculate example is supplied complete with current V5 registration document, current MOT and substantial history file including bills, Heritage Certificate, Workshop manual, Photographic history and other related materials.

A truly a unique opportunity to own a stunning example of a true British classic, which will certainly appreciate further over time.

As with all our cars the vehicle will go through a thorough pre sales inspection by one of our classic Jaguar experienced technicians prior to a new owner taking delivery.

For more information or to arrange a viewing please don't hesitate to call one of the Sales team here at Hofmann's.

Seller's description:

One of the First 100 E-Type FHCs Constructed - Beautifully Restored in its Original Colours

Location: United Kingdom •Title/Status: United Kingdom

Presented here is one of the earliest E-Types produced by Jaguar. Falling within the first 100 Series 1 3.8-litre Fixed Head Coupes builr, this flat-floor example was originally finished in Opalescent Silver Grey over a Red leather interior. Not immediately earmarked for an end user, the E-Type was delivered to Ashton Preston Garages in Preston to be used as a dealer demonstrator. Dispatched from the factory on December 18, 1961, this surely would have been the first E-Type seen by many and undoubtedly a car that won over many hearts and minds to what Enzo Ferrari called “the most beautiful car in the world”.

A buff logbook accompanying the car shows that it passed through the hands of two previous owners in Surrey in 1972 and 1973 respectively before finding its way to Barry Tickle, also of Surrey, in 1976. In a recent conversation with DK Engineering, Barry stated that he purchased the car as a restoration project for the princely sum of £150 from his neighbour. Barry restored the car himself in his spare time over the course of roughly twenty years. Photographs on file show that it was stripped to bare metal and resprayed in red with a red interior to match. A full mechanical overhaul followed suit, which included a full engine rebuild. Over the course of the ensuing twenty years after the completion of the restoration, Barry continued to own and enjoy the car as his pride and joy, taking it to various events and shows. Barry finally parted ways with his E-Type in 2015, trading in the car against a 1929 Vauxhall Herlingham

At this time, the car was acquired by another enthusiast who had been on the hunt for an early Series 1 E-Type for quite some time. Upon his purchase in 2016, the car was returned to its original Opalescent Silver Grey and the engine was rebuilt. Since the completion of that work, the car has seen minimal use and presents in wonderful condition throughout. Truly an excellent example of its breed, an early E-Type is a must have for any collector. With timeless good looks and exceptional performance for the era, the E-Type is an automotive icon and a car that will undoubtedly never go out of style.

Ready to be driven and enjoyed, this E-Type is presently located at our Chorleywood headquarters just outside of London.
