According to the widow of the original owner, this car is one of FIVE built with an overdrive unit. Car needs total restoration but could be extremely rare. Car has tripple Weber carbs and engine turns over freely. Odometer reeds 41,864 miles. Car originally purchased in Coventry England and later converted to left hand drive. Car is a BARNFIND and has been in storage for 30 years.

Ebay item 3/24/06
rust.It will require new inner and outer sills etc.. The floors have had replacement floorpans fabricated and put in place. They will need to be welded in.I believe that the car could be restored but it is possible that the car would be better used for parts. There is evidence of body filler and rust repair on the body panels. All the glass is in place but the windscreen has a crack in it. All tires including the spare are 185 R15 Dunlaps. They have excellent tread but they are old. All the wire wheels are in good shape with no broken spokes. The trunk area is solid with some minor repair work done with fiberglass. All of the gauges are intact. All of the toggle switches have been relocated to the custom built center console. The wiring harness is still in place and intact. The decal on the windshield still reads "London Area 1966" The car has not been picked over for parts. The English License Plate no. is still visible on the back. The odometer reads 41,864 miles. I believe this to represent the correct mileage. There are a couple of boxes of spare parts that will go with the car. These boxes contain the racing seatbelts, some spare bulbs, filters, and other odds and ends. Many in there original Jaguar Parts boxes.

The car has its I.D. plate still attached in the engine compartment. The Vin/Chassis no. matches the no. stamped on the frame. The engine no. matches the no. stamped on the front of the cyl. head casting. I have yet to locate the body no. but I am sure that this is the original body. The gearbox no. is impossible to see with the trans installed. The no. on the O.D. is confirmed as I was able to remove the tag, copy it, and then re-install it on the unit.

The drive train is all intact and the engine will turn over freely by hand. The tripple Webber Carburetors are still in place but the linkage is stuck. It will need to be well oiled and worked loose. The Sprinzel Racing Seats are in place and still serviceable. The O.D. with its extensively modified center console and all its wiring is still in place. No attempt has been made to try to start the engine.

The car is available for viewing and inspections by appointment. This car is a project car or a goldmine for parts depending on your preference. It will take a lot of work to restore. I recomend that you or your agent inspect this car prior to bidding. It is the buyers responsibility to do all research and inspections and to make their decisions on these findings solely. If you have any questions please ask them before bidding. I have tried to describe the car as accurately as I can.

This car is what it is. A very desirable Series One 3.8 Liter Fixed Head Coupe in need of total restoration. It is the most pure production model of the original design. It has the smaller air intake, narrow bumpers, smaller more delicate marker lamps, original Dunlap wire wheels with two eared knock-off spinners.

This could be an opportunity to own a piece of Jaguar History!

Current bid $4,550 reserve not met, 2 bids 6 days left in auction. Car now said to be in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sellers description:
Its been parked in a desert area for years and is one of, if not the only of two known modified by the Appleyards Jaguar Distributors of Leeds England for the son in law of Sir William Lyons ( owner of Jaguar at the time) the son-in-law's name being Ian Appleyard and his wife Pat who is the eldest daughter of Sir William Lyons. This is a very unusual car in almost every way in regards to performance. To begin with it is well documented that the Jaguar Company did not build any E types fitted with overdrive transmissions. however Jaguar historians have it that Sir Williams son-in-law fitted two such early E type cars with 4 speed overdrive transmissions in his family dealership in Leeds. Ian Appleyard was a very well known Ralley racer during the 40's and 50's. This car is believed to be and the papertrail strongly indicates this to be one of those cars converted at the "Jaguar Distributors" the family owned dealership in Leeds England.
The workmanship is well executed in every single detail, especially to hold up this well after 47 years, it utilizes British fastners and fittings throughout. One note... this car has NEVER been altered from its original condition since it arrived in Los Angeles from England in 1966. The car was modified for an american client in England in the manner of converting it to a left hand drive from a right. It was done with absolute perfection. The Client was a Mr. Baker who used the car in England and on that continent in trials and club racing events up through 1966 when the car was brought to the US where it was used in similar fasion for a short while. The car was never registered in the US and therefore never recieved an american title, only a bill of sale followed the car. Mr. Baker died some years ago and much of the history did with him as well saddly, his widow sold the car in the estate and also signed over the bill of sale.
A Mr. Beasley of Boulder Creek California purchased the car from the widow Baker , then requested a Heritage Certificate of which we have in possession at this time fully authenticating all that has been stated regarding the numbers on the car. Also in our paperwork is a letter from a Jaguar archivist Mike Cook hinting at the Appleyard overdrive gearbox connection. Here is a quote from the document dated feb 2 2006...is as follows:
"Your car was delivered through jaguar Distributors, the officeal name of Appleyards of Leeds. this was a family dealership and Ian Appleyard was a very successful international rally competitor in the 40's and 50's. His navigator was his wife Pat, oldest daughter of Sir William Lyons. They Later divorced.
My point here is that the overdrive might have been installed by the dealership. They Were used to preparing competition cars and som might have tackled the modification. However, again, there isnt any was to trace this. " Unqoute

The entire letter is available upon request if so desired.

What we do also know via Mrs Baker is the car competed in a number of events including an event at Nuerbring in Germany. Info is sketchy but one can tell buy looking at the workmanship of the transmission tunnel and installations of the other aforementioned items that this was all completely and professionally done. There isnt one single "backyard" job done on this automobile.
To begin with the car is showing original miles of 41864, the motor much to our amazement turns over effortlessly, the oil in the motor is the castor bean oil or green oil used in the 60's for racing and how long its been in there we havent a clue, yet its as clean as if put in yesterday. Its equiped with the following as well...

3.8 liter original motor, correct engine number of R5592-9 ( coincides with the Heritage Trust certificate)
Rearend gear ratio....rare....2.93:1 41/14 tag on differential (limited availability and later discontinued)
Trans overdrive unit is the MK-10 unit which is the more compact unit. Absolutely flawlessly installed
NOTE: This gearing puts the top end of this car well in excess of 150+ mph !
The antisway bars both front and rear are oversized and obviously for handling purposes.
The oil cooler rigging has a thermostatic valve to shunt oil from the cooler
The side draft weber carbs are date coded correctly in every way.
The hood is metal, with the stamped louvers
It had installed an early Capacitive discharge ignition system
It was also equiped with a remote cable to discharge a fire system from outside the front of the bonnet

The car has extensive rust on the lower rockers of which are all but gone. The pan is also in need of work. What damage there is caused by rust is replaceable and panels are available, and we also have a set of doors and one rocker panel as well included. Within the trunk was an assortment of items of which amazed us. The competition lap belts are dated 1966 and dont appear to have ever been installed. A number of switchs and bulbs etc that are all pictured and dated to the era and year of the car. Its truly a time capsule in many ways once we dug into the boxes of extra parts.

The seats to the best of our knowledge are of some other origin necessitated by the oversized tunnel . The stickers on the car have been there since its earliest beginnings. The plate number painted on the rear [PJX 649] is authentic and shows its age. It would be interesting to know if that number is traceable within the european motor vehicle division. This car is definately unmolested.
