Car for sale at:
www.thehairpincompany.co.uk/for-sale/cars/1962-jaguar-e-type-s1-3.8-coupe
An original lightly used unmolested E Type that is worn in, not worn out is a rare beast indeed, yet when found it will provide so much more pleasure on every level than a bland restoration even one to the highest quality. This coupe is just such a car, a 30,000 mile example nearly all of which were covered by the first owner who loved it until 2005. It has a full history and comes with everything that was supplied from new.
This early coupe, chassis 860617 was supplied to the ordering Jaguar dealer Windermere Engineering of Bowness on the 31st May 1962 via the main Jaguar distributor for the area, Ashton Preston Garages of Preston. The original ordering owner, a Mr R F Oxley of Priory Park, Ulverston, took delivery of his new E Type, registered KEC 30 on the 27th of June that year as confirmed on the original warranty card on file.
Mr Oxley was a Director of Oxley Developments, a firm specialising in the production of electronic components for the Ministry of Defence. He clearly liked the E Type as he kept it until 2005, used it gently and maintained it well shown not only by its lovely original condition today but also by a detailed service history with 22 detailed worksheets and every MOT certificate from July 1976 to August 2014 on file. As is often the case, the car covered most of its miles early on, indeed it was 23,089 miles up by 1969, this rising to 28,900 miles in 1981. Very early in its life an engine failure led to a replacement by Jaguar, R2986 replacing R5752 as detailed in Production Trace Certificate No 43429 as issued by the Jaguar Heritage Trust.
In 2005 the E Type passed to another Ulverston resident and possibly a friend of the original owner who registered it in his company name, John Morgan & Co. At this point the mileage was 30,138 miles and it rose to just 31,300 miles during his ten years of ownership. He obviously understood the importance of the cars originality as it continued to be carefully looked after and stored as we can ascertain from today’s condition.
The last owner, a real motoring enthusiast with an eye for a special car bought KEC 30 in September 2015 from a Brightwell’s auction in Leominster. Great interest and fierce bidding meant he had to pay £120,960 for the car, but once he got it home it quickly became clear it was worth every penny. The E Type although beautifully original and usable was clearly in need of some mechanical work if it was to be used as intended. To this end the car was sent to Jaguar specialists Winspeed Motorsport for a full inspection which led to a full mechanical overhaul to the highest standards. Invoicing on file amounting to in excess of £60,000 details the work completed. A pair of handmade leather bucket seats, an exact copy of those in the famous E Type Lightweight racer CUT 7 provide the only visual change and are so much more comfortable than the originals which have been preserved in perfect original order and accompany the car of course.
The work completed has ensured that KEC 30 does not spend its days as a static museum piece like so many, indeed a continental tour was completed following the overhaul during which the car performed perfectly, the sheer ability of a well sorted original E Type shining through.
So here we have the best of both worlds, a carefully preserved original low mileage E Type with all of the patina, look and smell that a restored example cannot hope to replicate but with fully rebuilt mechanicals ensuring the continued grace and pace that has made the model a deserved icon. The body remains original and lovely with the rarely seen factory weld lines and body stampings. This is also true of the interior which retains that wonderful original smell unique to a Jaguar, a tube of polish and cotton wool clearly from the period have been left where found in the glovebox.
In addition KEC 30 comes with the original items one rarely sees anymore including all manuals and service coupon book in the original owners wallet, factory guarantee card, original Jaguar Salesman’s Data Book, complete original toolkit, original steering wheel, original wheels, lubrication chart mounted on board as presented to the first owners of early E Types, very rare Jaguar fitted luggage as delivered new with KEC 30, original perfectly patinated undamaged front seats. Two history files as referred to above detail the life of KEC 30 from new.
On the road KEC 30 is simply extraordinary performing with a pace, lightness of feel and essentially a rightness that belies its years and serves to remind what a world beating car the E Type was and indeed still is.
