Car to be at auction 8/10
www.russoandsteele.com/collector-car/1963-Jaguar-Series-1-E-type-Roadster/5677

Auction description:
Consignment # 7037
VIN: 878960

Both cosmetically and mechanically restored to the same high standard, the 1963 model XK-E offered here was recently the subject of a comprehensive tub-up restoration to the highest standards. Now finished in Corvette Torch Red with a black leather interior and a charcoal top, the car is documented by a Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate as having departed the factory in Silver Blue over a red leather interior. The fully-restored interior was sourced from one of the most notable Jaguar vendors and is a period-correct black, while the center console is finished in period-correct Series 1 embossed aluminum, appropriate trim, new carpets and door panels. Both the car's convertible top and tonneau cover are likewise new, correct and of the highest quality.

Prior to the current vendor's ownership, the engine and transmission were overhauled by Straight Six, Inc. in Woodland Hills CA with internal modifications that include high-compression pistons, high-performance camshafts, larger valves, polished ports and a high-performance ignition. The rear end was inspected and deemed to be in good condition so it required no attention. With only 800 miles in test drives and run-in since the completion of the rebuild, the car runs and drives perfectly. The transmission is tight and smooth and the chassis is compliant, tracking straight and cornering wonderfully, making this unusually well-restored example a prime showpiece while retaining all of the characteristics that make the best XK-Es a pleasure to drive almost 50 years on.

According to its Jaguar Cars Heritage Certificate, this sleek E-Type Roadster first emerged from Jaguar's Coventry workshop on January 23, 1963 sporting Silver Blue paint over a red leather interior, protected by a black hood. Shortly thereafter, on February 4th, it was dispatched to the New York based Jaguar distributor to be united with its first owner, Angela M Cummlas of Schenectady New York. The new E-Type was completed with a left hand drive steering arrangement, and equipped for the U.S. market.

Today, this stunning E-Type presents in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically. In the early 2000s, the car was the subject of a comprehensive restoration. During the restoration, the colors were changed to the vibrant red/black combination that the car sports today. The work performed and parts used were all of the highest quality and have held up extremely well over the years. The engine and transmission were overhauled by Straight Six, Inc. in Woodland Hills CA. The original, matching numbers engine was upgraded with internal modifications that include high-compression pistons, high-performance camshafts, larger valves, polished ports and a high-performance ignition. The complex independent suspension system and braking system has been restored as well, giving this sleek sports car handling characteristics to match its strong powertrain and handsome cosmetic state. The restoration is documented with a 30 page album of photographs detailing the extensive process.

While under the care of the consignor, the beautifully restored Jaguar has been a Southern California favorite at events such as the Palos Verdes Concours, San Marino Motor Classic, Huntington Beach Concours, Muckenthaler, and Dana Point. Accompanying this fine Roadster is a tool kit contained in the seldom seen metal container which fits in the spare tire wire wheel rim with all tools specially contained therein, Heritage Certificate, restoration photos and owner's manual. Few cars can rival the Jaguar E-Type in performance, beauty, and desirability and this particular Roadster is a superb example of one of the most iconic cars of the '60s.

This 1963 Jaguar XKE is a Series I roadster that was built on January 23, 1963 and dispatched to New York the following February. The car is said to have later spent time in Washington State and California, where it underwent a refurbishment in the early-2000s that included repainting the exterior red, as well as reupholstering the interior, replacing the soft top, and overhauling the brakes and suspension. Power is supplied by a 3.8-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the ball-joint boots and fuel tank were replaced by the selling dealer in preparation for the sale. This Series I roadster has reportedly won several awards from concours events and classic car shows around Southern California, and it is now offered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a convertible top boot, service documents, refurbishment photos, a tool kit, a knockoff hammer, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Iowa title.

The car was originally finished in Opalescent Silver Blue and was repainted red in the early 2000s. Chrome 15″ wire wheels feature winged knock-off spinners and wear 185-series Vredestein Sprint tires. The refurbishment reportedly included replacement of the black convertible top and overhauls of the braking and suspension systems.

Originally trimmed in red, the interior was reupholstered in black during the refresh. Features include textured aluminum on the center console, a telescoping steering column, a height-adjustable rearview mirror, a Clarion AM/FM radio, lap belts, and toggle switches for the interior accessories.

A wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 52k miles.

The 3.8-liter DOHC inline-six and four-speed manual transmission were reportedly rebuilt during the refurbishment in the early-2000s by Straight Six, Inc. of Woodland Hills, California. Upgrades are said to include a ported and polished cylinder head, higher-compression pistons, more aggressive camshafts, larger valves, and a higher-output ignition system.

The selling dealer replaced the ball-joint boots and fuel tank in preparation for the sale, and the aluminum oil pan was repaired during previous ownership. The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate shows a dispatch date of February 4th, 1963 and lists the original colors and powertrain numbers.
