This 1961 Jaguar XKE is an early left-hand-drive, flat-floor Series I coupe that was completed on September 28, 1961, and distributed through Jaguar Cars, New York. The car was sold used to a buyer in Kansas City, Missouri, in May 1963, and, according to the seller, was moved to California in 1978. Originally finished in Cream over black leather, the car was partially disassembled during previous ownership, and the hood has been refinished in gray primer. Power is provided by a numbers-matching 3.8L DOHC inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes triple SU carburetors, split chrome bumpers, an aftermarket exhaust system with quad outlets, four-wheel disc brakes, and 15″ knock-off wire wheels. This XKE coupe project is now offered at no reserve with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, removed interior parts, a tool kit, a dealer invoice from 1963, and a clean California title in the name of the seller’s business listing it as a 1962 model.

Originally finished in Cream, the body is covered in worn white paint with gray primer on the bonnet. An early flat-floor FHC model, this example features welded bonnet louvers, glass headlight covers, and split chrome bumpers. The seller notes paint chips around the body, dents in the bonnet, and corrosion on the left-front rocker panel as well as the underside of the driver’s door.

15″ chrome knock-off wheels are wrapped in 205/70 Dunlop SP40 A/S tires. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors, and the four-wheel independent suspension utilizes torsion bars up front and coil springs at the rear. The seller notes that the brakes will need to be serviced and that the tires will need to be replaced before any road use.

The interior has been partially disassembled and features a driver’s seat upholstered in black as well as a black dash pad. The removed passenger seat will accompany the car.

The wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset clock. Auxiliary gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are mounted in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 27k miles, only a handful of which were added by the seller in 2020. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter DOHC XK inline-six features triple SU carburetors and was factory rated at 265 horsepower. According to the seller, a fuel system overhaul in 2020 included a replacement fuel tank, fuel sender, fuel pump, and lines, as well as new carburetors jets, floats, and needle and seat assemblies. A leak is noted in the oil pan as there is a crack at the drain plug hole.

Cylinder head stamping “R1894-9” matches the engine number on the underhood data tag as well as the engine number noted on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. An aftermarket dual exhaust system is fitted along with quad outlets beneath the rear bumper.

The included copy of the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists factory colors and identification numbers and shows a manufacture date of September 28, 1961.
