This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a left-hand-drive, flat-floor, welded-louver Series I coupe that was completed on November 30, 1961, and is said to have been sold new from British Car Distributors of Walnut Creek, California, in February 1962. The car was reportedly placed into storage in 1978 and remained with its original owner until it was inherited by the executor of their estate in 2019. Power comes from a numbers-matching 3.8L inline-six that is fed by triple SU carburetors and paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and the car is finished in Old English White over a red leather interior. The selling dealer reportedly transported the car from the original owner’s garage in October 2020, lubricated the cylinders, and cleaned the interior and exterior. The engine is said to turn over by hand, though additional sorting is required. This XKE is now offered on dealer consignment with a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, factory books, a tool roll, a hand-written mileage and service log kept by the original owner, and a clean California title in the name of the executor of the original owner’s estate.
The body is finished in Old English White and features split chrome bumpers, a driver-side mirror, and glass headlight covers. California black plates with 1982 registration stickers are fitted along with a Jaguar Associates Club grille bar. A factory bar is included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery. There is a weld repair in the rear license plate surround, and paint loss is noted on the rear valance.
Chrome wire wheels with two-eared knock-off spinners are mounted with older Michelin XAS 185 HR15 tires that require replacement. A matching spare is mounted beneath the trunk floor. Braking is managed by four-wheel discs.
The cabin is trimmed in red leather with a tan mohair headliner and features lap belts, a two-piece Hardura rear mat, and aluminum center console trim.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline. Just under 46k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer. A hand-written mileage log from the original owner lists a penultimate entry on May 5, 1978, at 44,942 miles, at which time the speedometer was noted as repaired.
The 3.8-liter inline-six features triple SU HD8 carburetors. The cylinders were reportedly lubricated for two weeks prior to turning, and the selling dealer states that the engine can be turned by the starter but has not been started with ignition since being removed from storage. Additional sorting will be required prior to regular use.
Cylinder head stamping R2937–9 matches the block stamping, chassis tag, and included Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, the car retains a Moss four-speed manual gearbox.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate shows the original colors and drivetrain numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates. Factory books, a tool roll and jack.
The chassis tag lists the original serial, body, engine, and gearbox numbers. Body number 885251 denotes this car as the 251st XKE fixed head coupe built by Jaguar, the VIN listed on the title is “J62885251,” and a secondary tag displaying “J/62” is also shown, which was reportedly fitted to California-market cars.
