1964 JAGUAR E-TYPE 3.8 LITER FIXED HEAD COUPE, WITH FACTORY WEBASTO SUNROOF. ORIG OPALESCENT SILVER BLUE WITH NAVY BLUE TRIM.

Up for sale, here on Ebay by KURT TANNER RESTORATIONS, is a 1964 Jaguar E-type 3.8 Liter Coupe with a rare and desirable Webasto Continental Sunroof. Jaguar had these sunroofs fitted to their cars by special order by their buyers. The cars were produced as standard coupes by the Company, then sent out to a Webasto fitter at one of their locations. After fitment of the roof, to a very high level of quality, the car was then delivered to a Jaguar dealer for the customer to take delivery of the new car. This was more common on European-delivered cars, as it was fairly rare to see a sunroof car in the States. I'm sure that the JDHT Certificate would have mention of this option.

This 3.8 Liter coupe was originally produced in Opalescent Silver Blue with a Navy Blue trim. A very nice light, cool color for a closed car... It has it's correct and original data plate. It had an engine change at some point in it's life with earlier E-type engine R8898-9. Both the cylinder head and block match to that number. The engine is currently stuck and needs rebuilding. It has a correct 3.8 transmission and triple carb induction system.

The body overall is decent. The original front dipped floor sections need to be replaced. The bonnet is actually very good with no rust-through, and has excellent shape and form to it. It appears to have come from a primrose-colored car. The trunk area looks decent from the inside, but there is some repairable rust-through areas on the underside. There is an extra hatch lid included with the car that is complete with all the needed parts. There is some minor damage to the LH rocker panel around the battery area. The rocker panels overall appear very solid. Apart from the front floors, the main floors in the car look exceptionally nice and very solid. The doors and hatch lid fit well.

This car is mostly complete but is missing a few easy items. Parts needed include a radiator and bonnet front subframe, headlight glass covers and rims, motif bar, air cleaner can, driveshaft, and windshield chrome trim (the lower is present). These items are all available new or used, and are shared with other models.

Overall, this is a very good, decent 3.8 Liter Coupe for full restoration. It has the extremely rare and special feature of a factory "authorized" Webasto Continental Sunroof, which would clearly set this car apart from other Coupes on the Concours field when restored. In my opinion it offers the best of both worlds: the visually stunning lines of the Series One Fixed Head Coupe coupled with the open air motoring sensation of a sunshine roof, all original and factory correct to this car...

This car is located and can be viewed in Southern California. It is sold with a clear and current California title. $36,500.

This 1963 Series-1 E-Type was built into its current race-specification by M & C Wilkinson Doncaster, c.2006 from a FHC shell. It was then registered in the UK as PAG622A. The V5 is present along with the Jaguar Heritage Production record. 

The car was always intended to be a Club Racer not an FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) car. It has been developed as an original E-Type racer would have been built in period. It also runs some uprated and modern components, thus mimicking the prestigious lightweights of the era. 

There is some paperwork with the car, and we do know that it was originally built by Mike Wilkinson for his son Michael to race in a variety of races including the Roger Bennington Heritage GT Series and CSSC Swinging Sixties. To say it was a success would be an understatement. In fact, Michael was so quick in this car (actually faster than Mike’s own full lightweight AFW) that Mike decided to let Michael run the lightweight in FIA events. 

The vendor, who has just retired from historic racing after many years, purchased the car at the end of 2007 and also ran it in the Roger Bennington Heritage GT Series, as well as the HRCA events in the Republic of Ireland and the CSSC Swinging Sixties.

THE INTERIOR

The custom-built lightweight aluminium dashboard neatly houses all of the vehicle's instrumentation and switchgear. Meanwhile, the blue Momo steering wheel and full race harnesses complement the paintwork well. Of course, this is a race car, so the priorities are practicality and raw speed, not style. Even so, the fit and finish inside is very good, clearly having been completed to a very high standard. The entire cabin is replete with brushed steel and aluminium, while the floor pans, pedals and some areas of the lower dash have been finished in steel checker plate.

As befits a track car, a full motorsport grade roll cage has been fitted. The Sparco buckets are set low, to allow for a perfect race driving position, while the deep side grip you firmly in place for high speed cornering. The requisite cut-offs for ignition and fuel, so vital in a race car, are also present and correct.

THE EXTERIOR

The body is an original steel tub with Fibreglass front end and flared rear wheel arches. Overall, the shell is in excellent condition. However, there are some areas on the door skinswhich may require improvement work in the future; it was always the current owner's intention to re-skin the doors in alloy at a later date.

In general the paintwork is in good condition but, as the vendor states, this isn’t designed to be a show car. It’s built for racing so there are a few swirls and marks but nothing that detracts from the car’s beauty. From any angle, this is an incredible looking machine, with lovely curves and fine proportions that give it a muscular, aggressive stance.

The car comes with peg-drive hubs, one set of ‘RS Panels’ wheels and two sets of ‘Realm Engineering’ wheels, as well as a spare set of three-eared spinners.

THE MECHANICALS

The current owner has had the engine stripped down, and has carried out extensive improvements. Some of the enhancements that have been made include:

Under that iconic long bonnet is a full race-spec 4.2-litre E-Type engine and Getrag gearbox. It's an enhanced and well-balanced engine with triple Weber carburettors. To give you an idea of the sort of power this powerplant is producing, the results from the rolling road test show a peak power rating of 331bhp and peak torque of 364 lb/ft.

Besides the improvements made to the engine, other aspects of the drivetrain have been overhauled and enhanced, including:

Cooper-craft brakes all round

Wide rear axle

Stainless steel exhaust system

The original picture frame crossmember has been replaced, however the original is included with the car and wears the correct VIN. All the numbers are visible on the engine and chassis, so can easily be confirmed. To make maintenance easier, the transmission tunnel can be removed, allowing access to the gearbox from inside the car. At the rear, the brakes are inboard andcan be bled from fittings installed in the aluminium-lined boot.

The car is running and driving well and only needs a new dated belt and fire extinguisher to be race ready.
