8/18/2013 Gooding Monterey auction had this car in a $150-$180,000 (without reserve) est. sale range this week. Will be interesting to see what it does considering it would be maybe a #3 car judged at JCNA (going only by underbonnet / hood frame visible in these photos). This is how a nice original driver with a sympathetic outer spray should look...if not kept under glass. Nice OTS.

This Car

The remarkable original condition of this Series 1 Jaguar E-Type is a credit to its first caretaker, Robert L. Staelens of Rock Island, Illinois.
On April 21, 1965, Mr. Staelens made an agreement with Tri-City Car Co. of Davenport, Iowa, whereby he would trade in his 1962 Ford Thunderbird against the price of a brand-new E-Type Roadster.
The E-Type he ordered was manufactured on August 13, 1965, and finished in the classic color combination of Opalescent Dark Green with beige leather upholstery and a black soft top. On September 3, 1965, the completed E-Type was dispatched and then distributed through Jaguar Cars New York to Mid-States Jaguar Ltd. of Chicago, Illinois.
The new Jaguar arrived in Davenport on October 22, 1965, equipped with chrome wire wheels, whitewall tires, a Motorola AM/ FM radio, grille guards, and a color-matched removable hardtop. That day, Mr. Staelens collected his car at the dealership and settled the $6,644.66 purchase price.
During his first year of ownership, Mr. Staelens drove and serviced the Jaguar regularly. According to a Tri-City Car Co. service receipt dated October 22, 1966 - exactly one year to the original day of purchase - the E-Type had covered 10,200 miles. Over the next two decades, the Jaguar was driven an additional 20,000 miles and was regularly serviced by Hiland Auto Sales and later, Ernie's Sports Car Centre.
Only after Mr. Staelens passed away in 1996 did his family offer the prized Jaguar for sale. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the E-Type passed through two collectors' ownership - one in Denver, the other in Philadelphia - who admired the car's outstanding history and presentation.
Over the past seven years, a New York collector has kept this marvelous Jaguar among his stable of original, unrestored spor ts cars. Today, this 40,000-mile, matching-numbers E-Type remains in exceptional condition throughout.
The bodywork displays precise gaps and excellent panel fit, qualities that are rarely duplicated on restored E-Types. According to the consignor, the Jaguar wears the majority of its original Opalescent Dark Green paint and retains its factory-supplied Triplex glass. Impressively, the factory body tag is present on the rear license plate panel and original factory chalk marks can be found on the firewall and the inside of the removable boot cover.
Similarly, the original beige leather upholstery and black fabric soft top are beautifully preserved and possess a lovely patina. A testament to this car's untouched state, decades-old service stickers from Tri-City Car Company and Hiland Auto Sales are still affixed inside the driver's doorjamb.
The engine compartment is also in an impressively original state, with the factory data plate and correct engine number stampings (head and block) appearing clear and bright. In addition, the gold paint on the cylinder head, cloth wiring loom, Champion spark plug caps, and "hammertone" paint finishes are all intact.
This E-Type is offered with an extensive file of paperwork dating back to the original order in April 1965. This remarkable collection of documents includes the original Bill of Sale from Tri-City Car Co., build record, manufacturer's warranty, services vouchers, service invoices (from 1965 through 1976), Illinois license receipts, and Michelin free safety check coupons - even the notation out of Mr. Staelens' 1965 calendar reminding him to pick up the car. Additionally, the original tool kit, owner's manual, dealer-supplied hardtop, and several original Lucas and Champion components accompany the sale.
Ideally specified, comprehensively documented, and presented in excellent original condition, this E-Type is one of the most exciting Series 1 Roadsters to appear at auction in many years.
