Well finally the restoration begins!!
I have noted some confusion regarding when covered headlights ended. I have owned this car since 1976 and do not believe the bonnet was replaced before I bought it. This car has covered headlights!! By JCNA judging standards it should not have covered headlights. Their opinion (E-Type Judging Guide 7th revision June, 2013) is that glass covers for OTS were deleted at car number 1E14535. However, the XKEData Car Numbers Guide indicates covers were deleted as of car number 1E15888. This is consistent with my car and several other cars noted on this site. I believe JCNA is incorrect.

Robert,
There has historically been much confusion about the date for the deletion of the headlight covers. The 1E15888 number listed on this site is the same number listed in Paul Skilleter's book The Jaguar E Type a Collectors Guide published in England in 1979(The E Type "bible" of it's day). With greater interest in E Types over the subsequent 38 years and the greater availability of information from the internet, Skilleter's number, and this site's number, is now recognized as the date for the deletion of headlight covers in non-USA markets in July 1967. The JCNA number of 1E14535 and a mid January date would have come from factory build data and are now recognized as accurate for USA delivered cars. A review of photos on this site starting with 1E14535 confirms the JCNA number and date, although many open headlight cars have been converted to the covered headlight configuration over the last 49 years.
Good luck with your restoration

I second the above. JCNA now has a set of notes specifically dedicated to these cars that outlines the exact dates and VINs when the covered headlights were deleted. First happened in January of '67 though Porter's book states August of '67. I assume Porter's date is actually the model year '68, which were the federalized cars with the emission and safety mandates. JCNA has coined the term series 1.25 instead of series 1.5 which they have been accused of for many years (ask me how I know). The JCNA document that confirms these changes is "Jaguar E Type, 3.8 & 4.2L, 36th Annual General Meeting, March 3-6, 1994, Charlotte, N.C. page 53.
