Auction description:
2020 Shannons Spring Timed Online Auction
Lot 169
1965 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 1 Coupe
$100,000 - $120,000
Location: Sydney
- Desirable Jaguar E-type 4.2 Series 1
- Factory RHD example in original colours
- Well-maintained by Graeme Lord for long-term owner
This lovely Jaguar E-type is a desirable 4.2 Series 1 model with the torquier engine and synchro gearbox, finished in the original factory colours of Opalescent Silver Blue with Navy Blue leather upholstery. An original right-hand drive model completed at Browns Lane on April 29, 1965, the car was delivered through Henlys of London but has lived in Australia for most of its life; the known history goes back to 1976 when it was first registered in Queensland. Previous owners include Queenslanders Don Ross (who bought the car in 1979 and restored it) then David Reed, whose tenure ran from 1984 until 1998. The current long-term Sydney custodian, a longtime car enthusiast and VSCCA member, purchased the E-type in 1998 and engaged marque specialist Graeme Lord to carry out a major mechanical overhaul over the next two years. The engine underwent a complete engine rebuild with forged pistons, precision balancing and a replacement cylinder head (the original wasn’t usable); the gearbox and tail-shaft overhauled, a new heavy duty clutch fitted and the brake system overhauled with upgraded front discs/calipers. New 6-inch Dayton wheels with splined hubs were also fitted at the time. Graeme Lord has continued to maintain the E-type for the past 20 years, servicing the car regularly with copious receipts documenting the work performed. The owner has enjoyed driving the Jaguar on numerous club rallies and tours, covering thousands of trouble-free kilometres in the 22 years he’s owned the car. Whilst the cosmetics could use some freshening up, this beautiful E-type ticks a lot of boxes – mechanically sorted by a recognised marque expert, it’s ideal for someone wanting a desirable Series 1 FHC in one of the best colours that starts on the button and is a strong performing car on the open road. Currently registered on non-transferable historic plates in NSW until July 2021, the car will therefore be sold unregistered and comes with a history folder, owner’s handbook, workshop manuals and other reference material. A number of parts come with the car, including the original cylinder-head, a complete set of new body rubbers from Welsh Enterprises and a plate for installing a Halda Twinmaster on the dash – a full list is available for inspection.
