Lot 634: Jaguar E Type Series 1 4.2 Coupe
Important Collectors' Motor Cars, Bonhams (1st December 2008)

Having been supplied by Jaguar Dealers Ritchies of Glasgow 3 June 1965 to first owner Dennis Billingham, an oil industry engineer working in the South African oil industry, the car was shipped by him to Cape Town in 1966. By 1985, when purchased by Icky Kurgan of Cape Town, 57,000 miles were displayed  indeed, during the last twenty-three years, the car would appear to have done only around 6000 more miles. The current owner acquired it in 2007 to tour South Africa prior to his return with the car to the UK in September 2008, by when the overall mileage had risen to 63,429. The owner advises us that the bodywork is totally original apart from the outer sills which were replaced in 1986 when the car was repainted in the current black, which, apart from some minor shrinkage, presents really well as do the chrome wire wheels. The original seats in grey leather are in particularly fine order, whilst we are advised that the brakes have been upgraded at some time. The whole rear end was dismantled and completely overhauled with many new parts fitted around 2000 miles ago. More recently, a complete exhaust system in stainless steel has been fitted and the car was 'winterised' with all fluids changed and battery renewed by a Jaguar specialist who also overhauled the alternator and changed the clutch slave cylinder. A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust 'Heritage Certificate' confirms the manufacturing details as well as still matching production numbers for chassis, engine, gearbox (EJ2847) and body (4E21760), whilst importation and tax paid documents are present. The car has an original owners manual, UK registration, historic vehicle eligible tax disc and fresh MOT test certificate. With the larger capacity engine being smoother and more powerful, the gearbox having synchromesh on all ratios, the brakes being improved by servo-assistance and the seats adjustable, a Series 1 E Type 4.2 is rightly highly regarded. The current owner, an historic race driver and aficionado of this model, rates this particular fixed head as probably the best driving E Type of the many he has owned.

I now own this E-type, as of December 2008. I am the director of Classic Travelling Ltd, organising classic motoring tours for a variety of classic car clubs, including the E-type Club, XK Club and Jaguar Drivers' Club. This is my main touring car for these tours and in 2009 the car has already been to 6 European countries, as far afield as the Baltic States.
However, I'd love to find out more about this history of the car.

The car is currently being resprayed back to its original colour - opalescent silver grey. It was painted black in 1986, and after some bodywork damage from a tyre blowout in 2009 I have decided to return the car to its original colour. Photos soon...
