Car to be at bonhams auction 8/08
    www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r

    Auction description:
Sale 16133 - Quail Lodge, A Sale of Exceptional Motorcars and Automobilia, 15 Aug 2008
Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club, Carmel, California

    Lot No: 314•
    1965 Jaguar XKE Series 1 4.2 Coupe
    Chassis no. 1E30680
    Engine no. 7E2780-9
    Body no. 1E20920

    The subject of a no-expense-
spared restoration, this Series 1 E-Type coupe is one of the finest examples available in the marketplace today. Its engine has been subjected to careful rebuilding to factory specifications, including new pistons, bearings, timing chain, oil pump and water pump. The head was machined, surfaced, rebuilt and calibrated, with new valves, guides, keepers, bearings, tensioner and seals. The carburetors were also rebuilt and new fuel pump installed. The clutch was replaced, braking system rebuilt with new parts and new suspension components fitted. The transmission and rear end were also rebuilt.

The body was stripped, metal finished, fitted and painted with base coat and clear coat, color sanded, then buffed to a superb finish. All new rubber seals, grommets and gaskets were used. A new wiring harness was installed, the fuel tank hot tanked and epoxy sealed. All electrical components, including gauges, knobs and switches, were rebuilt or replaced, and a new Triplex windshield and door glass were installed. New drip panels were also furnished.

The brightwork has been replated as needed, and new leather seats, dashboard, console, radio console, grab handle and interior panels have been fabricated and custom stitched. The carpeting and headliner are also all new. A most comprehensive restoration, it left no detail overlooked, no component untouched. A DVD of the restoration process accompanies the car, which also comes with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate confirming its build specifications. The odometer reads 47,980 miles, just 100 of them since restoration. For all intents and purposes a new Jaguar, with the heritage of originality, this XKE coupe is sure to please its new owner.

    Estimate: $110,000 - 140,000

Two consecutive 99.8-plus points results in JCNA judging
Eligible for the JCNA National Championship
Accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate
This car has essentially been restored twice in the past decade. Prior to sale in 2008, it received a dramatic complete restoration of sufficient quality to win back-to-back First Place awards at judged JCNA events. As a show car, it was never properly run in, and after acquisition, the consignor spent two years ensuring that it operates at the same standard. The result is a car that is in fundamentally showroom-new condition. A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate verifies the 1E chassis number, marking it as a "pure" Series 1 4.2-liter E-Type, and a DVD of the restoration and a binder of subsequent receipts documents that the car was completely disassembled and rebuilt as new.

Featuring a recent mechanical and cosmetic freshening by marque specialist
Accompanied by its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate

Prior to its sale in 2008, this car received a dramatic, complete restoration of such quality to win back-to-back First Place awards at judged JCNA events. As a show car, it was never properly run in, and after its acquisition, the consignor spent two years ensuring that it operates at the same standard. A Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate verifies the 1E chassis number, marking it as a Series 1 4.2-liter E-Type, and a DVD of the restoration and a binder of subsequent receipts documents that the car was completely disassembled and rebuilt as new.

More recently, in preparation for the 2014 Monterey auction, the Jaguar was sent to marque specialists at Classic Showcase, of Oceanside, California, where it had a complete and extensive engine-out service. This E-Type has been both mechanically and cosmetically freshened to a high standard, and in a recent road test, the car performed admirably and without fault.

"There is not a better looking car in the world," laments the consignor, and there are few under seven figures that could offer a comparable driving experience. Since it is well sorted both mechanically and cosmetically, a long road trip to the next JCNA Concours should be on top of the next owner's agenda.

Refinished in its current color combination of Dark Blue over Beige by a previous owner, this particular fixed head coupe was fully restored prior to being acquired by a well-known Jaguar collector in 2008. Shortly after its restoration, it received not one but two First Place awards at JCNA events. Subsequent to its show career, the collector spent two years ensuring that it operates at the same standard as its aesthetics.

In 2014, the car was shipped to the Jaguar specialists at Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California, where it received an extensive engine-out service. Purchased by its current custodian thereafter, the car has remained in his collection ever since and still presents beautifully. Importantly, the car is accompanied by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate and a binder of restoration receipts and documents chronicling recent work, as well as a set of owner's manuals and an original tool kit.

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this exquisite 1965 Jaguar E-Type Series I Coupe. Finished in Dark Blue over Biscuit hides, this example was restored in the early 2000s by noted Jaguar specialist Classic Showcase. It subsequently won first-place awards at two judged JCNA events prior to our client's acquisition in 2008 at the Bonham's Quail Lodge auction in Carmel. He sold it at RM Monterey in 2014, but was so fond of the car (and regretful of the sale) that he bought it back when it was offered at RM Amelia in 2016. The concours-quality restoration has stood the test of time, as this XKE has been very well cared for and still presents beautifully inside and out.

We, and this car's owner, are of the opinion that there is no such thing as a car that's "too nice to drive" -- and that a late Series I E-Type deserves to be driven and enjoyed, smudges be damned. The 4.2 liter with a triple carb setup (1965 to 1967 only) is without a doubt the best, and this example is particularly well-sorted mechanically. In an era when so many of these cars are put away in collections and brought out from time to time to admire, it's refreshing to find one like this that runs and drives just as good as it looks.

A Series I E-Type Coupe is one of the most beautiful cars ever made -- but it's a mechanical masterpiece well, and one that offers a thrilling experience for its driver.
