Though approximately 7,770 examples of Jaguar's celebrated E-Type coupe were manufactured between 1965 and 1968, finding strong, undamaged representatives of these late Series 1 cars can be difficult. Many have been finely restored to JCNA concours standards, sometimes making them prohibitively expensive when offered for sale. By contrast, it is refreshing to come across such a wonderfully original and unrestored example.

According to this E-Type's chassis number and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust records, this car was only the 30th left-hand drive two-seat coupe manufactured in the 1966 model year sequence. The Jaguar also features its original Michigan title (an unusually authentic piece of documentation), ordered on January 9, 1967, by owner Eugene Grabowski of Detroit and issued to him 10 days later. Still wearing Michigan license plates, this car likely spent a majority of its life in the Great Lakes region before being recently acquired by the consignor.

An examination of the patinated E-Type clarifies that it has a strong foundation for a quality restoration. The data plate identification numbers properly match chassis and engine stamps, indicating that this car is a matching-numbers example, possessing its original drivetrain components. The E-Type retains its original wire wheels, matched by a wire-wheel spare in the trunk, and an original tool kit. Though the exterior has an obvious degree of weathering, structural elements appear strong and sound, with good panel fit and gaps. The interior displays a faithful, if aged, presentation, with all of the dash switches and the vinyl console intact, including the original radio, speakers and wood-rimmed steering wheel.

In the hands of a capable and knowledgeable restorer, this E-Type would be an ideal candidate for transformation into a quality driver; for the true connoisseur searching for a more substantial E-Type project, this car could be the basis of a showwinning restoration. In any case, this car is ready for re-entry into the world of Jaguar enthusiasts, offering the considerable cachet of the model often referred to as the world's most famous sports car.

Current bid $27,100 reserve not met, 11 bids 9 days left in auction. Car now said to be in Santa Barbara, California.

Seller description:
Offered for sale is what is surely one of the most original, unmolested, solid and correct 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupes in existence. A true time capsule, this is a one owner, 14k original mile example that has been in dry storage for the last 30 years. Ordered by an engineer from Detroit Michigan on January 9th, 1967 and delivered to him ten days later, the car was his pride and joy, purely a weekend, summer-weather driver until 1983, when a back injury forced him to hang up the keys. Still, he was reticent to part with the car, hoping for a day when a successful surgery would allow him to truly drive it once again. Sadly that day never came, and the Jaguar sat in a heated barn on his property until his passing in 2012. At that point his estate put the car up for sale, and we were fortunate enough to have come across it.
Upon receiving the car in California, we had everything gone through to bring the original 4.2L, matching numbers engine back to life. The gas tank was drained, professionally cleaned and re-installed, the original triple SU carburetors were rebuilt and the rest of the fuel system was gone through. Dormant for three decades, the original engine immediately roared to life, proving to have a consistent idle, an operating cooling system and truly excellent compression. Next the brakes were addressed to make the car a safe driver and, upon the installation of a few fuses, we were pleased to find that all of the original electrical systems were functioning properly, rounding out a process towards roadworthiness that could have been an utter nightmare. Perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised, as the car's cosmetic condition reinforces the hardly used, 14k original mile history.

First and foremost, upon inspection the data plate identification numbers properly match chassis and engine stamps, which all match the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. Though the exterior has an obvious degree of weathering, the car's body has excellent panel fit and gaps and the car's structural elements and undercarriage are all completely original and entirely solid and sound. The chrome and glass is in fantastic original condition and the car is entirely complete. The interior displays a faithful, patinated presentation, with all of the dash switches and the vinyl console intact, including the original radio, speakers and wood-rimmed steering wheel. The leather seats and all of the vinyl interior panels are surprisingly supple and the headliner and carpets are in entirely presentable condition, showing their age, yes, but also the incredibly minimal amount of use they've received. That's the case with virtually everything in the car: just switching the knobs, moving the seats, opening the windows, the spare tire compartment, etc. etc., everything feels entirely crisp and correct. It feels exactly like the 14k mile car that it is.

As anyone who is seriously pursuing an E-Type will attest, finding strong, unmolested examples of these late Series 1 cars is becoming virtually impossible. Many have been finely restored to JCNA concours standards, making a vast majority prohibitively expensive when offered for sale. By contrast, we were thrilled to come across such a wonderfully original, honest and unrestored example. The car currently presents as an incredible, preservation class quality, weekend driver, suitable for shows and events, but it would also be considered perhaps the most solid, original, low mile platform on the market for a Concours-winning restoration. Regardless of its next owner's preference, we're sure this E-Type will provide him/her with all of the same pride, joy and years of thrilling motoring that it afforded its first owner. Where are you going to find another one like this? Please bid accordingly.
