This 1968 Jaguar E-type fixed-head coupé is one of those interim cars, known unofficially as a Series 1.5, that mates the Series 2’s 4.2-liter engine and open headlamps with a body that’s largely unchanged otherwise. According to chassis numbers from the Jaguar Heritage Trust, this is one of 830 left-hand-drive fixed-head coupés from 1968, and it is said to have been previously owned by the journalist Jamie Kitman. It’s believed to have one repaint and an accurate odometer reading.
POWERTRAIN
The Series 1.5 E-type was powered by Jaguar’s 4,235-cc DOHC straight-six, with a compression ratio of 9.0:1. The Series 2 engine, as we have here in this coupé, receives its fuel from dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors as opposed to the earlier trio of SU units, and was rated by the manufacturer at 246 horsepower. The engine in this E-type is said to be original to the car, with a reportedly rebuilt cylinder head, new fuel pump, new radiator with electric fans, and a rebuilt alternator. The engine is said to emit smoke only when left sitting for long periods. The four-speed manual transmission is reported to change gears smoothly. Slight powertrain leaks are noted. The engine bay appears to be stock, including the correct black-finished camshaft covers, and looks to be generally clean, in the provided photos.
EXTERIOR
The seller reports that this FHC underwent a bare-metal refinishing and describes the finish today as being in “very good” condition, with no dents or chips. The body seals are said to be in good condition, with no indications of leaks. The seller says that any previous rust issues were addressed when the car was painted, and that corrosion is now limited to surface rust around the build plate. The chrome appears to be complete and in good, undamaged condition, in the photos. The glass is said to be in good condition, with no cracks, and all the exterior lighting is reported to be operational.
INTERIOR
The leather surfaces look to be in very good condition, with no evidence of tears or cracks visible in the photos and only minor wear creasing. All the seat adjustments are said to be in working order. The carpeting has rubber Jaguar floormats and is reported to be in good condition, as is the headliner. The padded dashboard has correct Series 1.5 rocker switches and has instrumentation that is reported to be fully functional and accurate. A Panasonic CD audio system is in the dash. The heater is said to be operable. The luggage area appears to be undamaged and generally clean, in the photos.
CHASSIS
The seller says the rear suspension was rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago and the front end rebuilt within the last three years. No functional issues or damaged components are noted, and the seller says the four-wheel disc brakes are in proper working order. The wire wheels are reported to be in undamaged, true condition, although the seller recommends replacing the tires.
DOCUMENTATION
The seller states that this vehicle will be sold on a clean Connecticut title in his name. Additional paperwork includes a large file of service. This 1968 Jaguar E-type fixed-head coupé is described as a well-maintained, driver-quality example.
