This E-type was purchased by the current owner at the start of last year as an unfinished project. The current owner’s plans were to get the car over that line to being a finished car with the aim to complete the final work as a father/son project. Lots of work had been done on the car from the previous owner including a complete engine rebuild, leaving lots of little jobs that just needed to be tidied up. The whole car has undergone a thorough inspection, significant body and paint work and an intensive clean during the current owner’s time leaving the car looking good. The previous owner had considerable engine work done to the car and the current owner reports that the car is a thoroughly enjoyable drive as a result. The most notable of which is the uprated cylinder head and the completely refurbished carburettor systems. The current owner has decided to move the car on due to health-related issues but has completely enjoyed their time with the car.

On the Outside

The bodywork completed recently on the E-type has left the car looking extremely presentable with the paintwork being brand new. The car was painted due to the bonnet being damaged in transit. Instead of fixing the bonnet, which was beyond repair, the owner managed to find a genuine heritage replacement for the car which was then painted to match the rest of the body.

Now, with old paint being notoriously hard to blend to with a newly sprayed panel, the decision was taken to repaint the entire car to match the bonnet’s new colour. The resulting work saw the car stripped back on the exterior including the underside of the car. The petrol tank was removed and checked for leaks and rust and the area was painted in its absence.

Whilst all the brightwork was off the car, the decision was made to send it off for re-chroming, which further highlights the fantastic job done on the body. The wheels have also been treated to a recondition as they were sent off to be refurbished whilst the car was in the body shop. Rounding off the exterior condition, all electrics work including the lights and the owner reports that the previous owner must have upgraded the headlights due to their admirable performance in the dark. They are now less like candles in jam jars and more in keeping with modern illumination, helpful in the dark wintery months. The only part of the outside that requires mentioning is the very minor chip in the paintwork on the edge of the rear door, it has been filled in with a touch up pen by the looks of it but is worth mentioning, nonetheless.

On the Inside

Climb inside the driver’s side of E-type and you’re met with that huge wooden rimmed steering wheel in all its glory. The wheel is in great condition with no lacquer flaking or splintering and no dulling or damage to the metal sections. The steering wheel sits proud of the dash where you’ll find something very rare, a genuine mileage of 73,496. This is down to the car being off the road since the late 80’s undergoing a slow restorative process back to its former glory.

The dashboard is in great condition with no cracking, all of the dials are in good condition also with all of them working as intended. The black upholstery around the car is part original, part new, with the carpets being new units from the previous owner. Everything has had a thorough clean, and light restore to bring it back up to this fantastic condition.

There is some slight wear on the leather on the driver’s seat, but this should be easily fixable with some leather feed. There are no rips or tears in the seats which is the main plus point and the padding in the seats for the bolsters looks to be in good condition as well. The only thing to mention in the interior is the slight rip in fabric down by the handbrake. This looks like it could be repaired, or the centre console could be re-trimmed should you wish, although it’s not a big enough issue to warrant immediate attention.

The rear seats are in fantastic condition and look as though they have not done much work during their life with very little, if any, wear and tear. The rear luggage space is again in great condition and looks like it might have had some restorative work done if not had parts replaced during its time up on axle stands in the garage during the previous owner’s time with the car. Underneath the luggage space in the rear is the spare wheel well, again in good condition with the full-size spare sat snugly in the space. Lastly in the interior of the E-type, the headlining which was done by the previous owner and to ‘a very high standard’ as reported by the current owner. In summary the interior of this E-type is a wonderful place to be and offers plenty of comfort as well as nostalgia.

Underneath

The underside of the E-type’s shell as previously mentioned is in great condition which makes sense due to the very low mileage. During the paint and body work however, the underside was treated and painted making sure the condition was as good as the top side. There are clear signs of stone chip/rust prevention being applied and the arches are very good indeed. The components underneath all look to be in great condition with all suspension and drivetrain related mechanics being in great working order. There is minimal, if any at all, surface rust underneath and there is no damage to be seen on the floor, sills or arches.

Mechanicals overhauled

This lovely Jaguar E-Type Series I 2+2 Coupé has been the subject of a body and mechanical restoration completed in 2021, this included a ‘bare metal’ repaint in this stunning dark red. The engine has been rebuilt, the gearbox overhauled, the suspension gone through and new shock absorbers fitted. The steering rack has been rebuilt, a complete overhaul of the rear axle, drive shafts and universal joints and the brakes rebuilt including new brake calipers and pads. This is the second restoration, the first being carried out in 1988 when we believe the interior was done and a Series I½ bonnet fitted. The black leather interior has recently lightly Connolized to return it back to very good condition. This 2+2 Coupé is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in January 2023 and a file containing old MoT test certificates and invoices for the restoration work carried out in 1988 and 2020/21.

It is one of the rarest E Types manufactured by Jaguar, as only 974 RHD were ever built. However, arguably a Series 1. 5 making it even more rare and collectable.

The more recent lovely shiny respray presents this classic sportscar as a real thing of beauty!

Four previous owners appear to have cherished and cared for this car and it comes with a large file recording all parts and work done over the years. Major restoration work in 1988 and again in 2021 with MOT and service history showing the work done over many years. Mileage recorded as 74, 281 with only approx. 7000 miles on new rebuilt engine.

Bought from a Classic Car dealer in 2023 fortunately this car appears very original and in great condition retaining its authenticity. It is driven regularly and drives and handles very well. This vehicle received a Drive Day Award in 2024 judged best Series 1 2+2.
