    New clutch and brake masters fitted today on a rebuilt pedal box. We are nearly ready for the gearbox to go in but my back is going to need a couple of weeks to recover. I really must get a lift at home. Everything is just a bit low for a poor old devil like me.

    Hi Andy, well done on the conversions. BTW the original may have been painted black by somebody, but servos should be the colour of your new one, or slightly more zinc/bluish rather than today's golden Cad finish, so no worries there. What I would do though is make sure you get a heat shield to stop it cooking slowly. Even the RHD cars had the lower shield. Dave Kerr does very nice stainless repros

    Series 1 Jaguar 4.2 2+2 fitted with a 4 speed maual gearbox with overdrive.

    First off this is a driving car. She is not a show car so if you are going to get upset by every stonechip and think that gives you some leverage to knock another £500 off the price please look elsewhere. This is a car that is used regularly and that you coan jump in and drive anywhere. I really don't want to listen to a string of people telling me that this isn't quite right and that isn't how it left the factory.

    So what we have is a lovely looking and very solid (ex USA) car. I fitted the manual overdrive box and this transformed it into a fantastic driving machine. That horrible 3 speed auto really spoils the E Type experience. She now gets off the line quickly but you can cruise at 70mph at a shade over 2000rpm. The paintwork is not great. The repray she had when it came back home in '89 was not show standard. As you can see from the photos it looks fine from 10ft and that does me. I didn't want something that I was scared to take out and leave in a carpark. The sills have 500ml of wax a side in them and the other box sections have been treated. The interior is great. It's in good condition but it has a lovely patina. That is something you can't go out and buy.

    I've made a number of upgrades over the years to improve her as a driving car:

    WiIwood 4 pot capilers and slotted front discs

    New brake master cylinder and servo

    Double S stainless exhaust system.

    GAZ adjustable front dampers

    Facet fuel pump and filter king regulator

    123 IGN electronic distributor

    and probably a load more I can't think of now.

    Negatives? Well I'm sure you could go round the car with a note pad and draw up a list of things you'd like to change but don't show it to me. I wouldn't look over your wife and then hand you the verdict so keep it to yourselves please. However I would say that the bottoms of both door skins need attention due to rust blisters. I wasn't able to get in here with the wax before rust took hold. It was a job I was going to do at the end of this summer. There is some rust forming on the surface of the seams under the boot and these could do with cleaning and protective paint before next winter. Mechanically the only fault I can think of is a noisey valve bucket on start up after she has been standing for a while. It shuts up once the oil is flowing and hasn't got any worse in the years I've had the old girl. You could blow £50 and fit a securing kit. You could blow a lot more and rebuild the head. Or you could just leave it for a decade or two. By the way a standard air filter system is fitted (I could only find a photo with the bellmouths one)

    I have placed her with a specialist dealer who will handle the nuts and bolts of the sale. She is a bit too close to my heart for me to want to hand her over. However I will be glad to keep in touch with the new owner (after a period of mourning).
