Famously launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type created a furore. Its combination of supercar performance, superb styling and low price tag was unrivalled. Early sportscar racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori amongst others cemented its reputation. Built as a monocoque with a front subframe to cradle the engine, its combination of all round independent suspension and disc brakes allied to rack and pinion steering gave it excellent roadholding and handling capabilities. The indomitable XK twin cam supplied abundant power. If the design had an Achilles'' heel then it was the recalcitrant Moss gearbox. However, Jaguar was quick to correct this shortcoming with a four-speeder of its own design just part of a continual programme of E-Type development that saw the model metamorphose through three Series. Introduced in 1968, the Series II cars were distinguishable by their revised bumper and light arrangements. Less noticeable was the increased size of the front air intake that in conjunction with dual cooling fans made the Series II better behaved in hot weather and heavy traffic. With its 4235cc engine developing 265bhp and 283lbft of torque, it was capable of nearly 150mph and 0-60mph 7.5seconds. Such performance made its improved brake servo all the more welcome. This particular example was imported from the USA in 1989. Treated to a substantial restoration, it was also converted to right hand drive and upgraded to UK specification with triple SU carburettors. Described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition, it has only recently been re-commissioned following a period of careful storage. As a testament to the quality of its previous renovation very little was needed to make it roadworthy. Work done included the fitting of stainless steel exhaust, strip down and rebuild of the front callipers and replacement of the rear radius arm bushes. The car is finished in arguably the classic combination for an E-Type of British Racing Green paintwork and biscuit leather upholstery. Pleasingly, it rides on chrome wire wheels and retains a wood rim steering wheel. Offered for sale with V5 registration document and MOT current until August 2003. Estimate: £18,000-£20,000
