1969 Jaguar XKE Coupe Series II

Lot #1363

Sold On 5/17/16 For $54,000

Location: Fall River, Nova Scotia, Canada

Chassis: J691R26495

5000 miles shown

Non-origianl 4.2L engine

Triple SU Carburetors

Covered headlights

Restored from 1997-2002 with receipts

Private Party or Dealer: Private Party

This 1969 Jaguar XKE Coupe Series II was restored in Canada between 1997 and 2002 and has been with the seller for the last 10 years. The car is powered by a non-original 4.2L engine from an earlier E-Type and has been upgraded with a triple SU carburetor setup and covered headlights like the Series I cars. The restoration was carried out by Classic Coachwork in Ontario and receipts totaling $100k CAD at the time are included in the sale.

The car was taken down to bare metal and repainted in its current black color scheme. The look is improved with backdated glazed-in early style headlights, and wire wheels have large-ear knockoffs with redline tires.

Turn signals and taillights below the bumpers are correct for a Series 2 car.

Paintwork and chrome show a high level off finish and a deep shine. New chrome was done at the time of restoration.

The interior has been reupholstered in red leather, the surfaces of which appear to be in good condition throughout. The stock stereo is no longer fitted, replaced by a Pioneer dating from the time of the restoration.

Apart from the stereo, the interior appears otherwise correct with appropriate Series II rocker switches rather than the toggles fitted to the earlier cars.

The rear cargo area was retrimmed in red leather and appears little used.

The car was fitted with a 4.2L from an earlier XKE in 2004. Rather than the twin Zenith-Stromberg CD2S carburetors standard for US-market cars, this one has been fitted with a preferred triple SU setup used in other markets. The airbox and manifold appear to be correct for a ROW XKE, and the engine bay looks nicely finished. The seller notes that the engine, transmission and suspension are all in good condition throughout, and that the car feels strong on the road.

Underbody surfaces show well, with minimal dirt present on drivetrain and suspension components.

Note the stainless exhaust system.

Extensive documentation and photos from the restoration are included. The car is sold with a clean Nova Scotia title in the seller's name.

Private Party Or Dealer: Private Party

This 1969 Jaguar XKE coupe is a Series II example which was refurbished in Canada between 1997 and 2002, and it is finished in black over red leather and powered by an earlier 4.2L XK inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Modifications include a triple SU carburetor setup and Series I-style covered headlamps, and features include air conditioning, wire wheels with winged knock-offs, stainless-steel exhaust, and an aftermarket stereo. The seller acquired the car in a 2016 BaT auction, and during current ownership the air-conditioning compressor and battery were replaced. This XKE is offered with records and photos from the refurbishment as well as a clean California title.

During prior ownership the car was stripped and repainted in black by Classic Coachworks of Blenheim, Ontario, and the exterior chrome trim was replated. The headlights were converted to covered Series I components, though the car retains Series II under-bumper tail lights and turn signals.

Chrome-finished 15″ wire-spoked wheels are mounted with winged knock-offs and are fitted with red stripe Coker Classic tires measuring 195/75 at all four corners. Braking is handled by four-wheel discs, with the rear pair being mounted inboard.

The cabin has been reupholstered with red leather covering the seats, sills, center console, and cargo area, along with a contrasting black dashboard and a gray headliner. A Pioneer stereo was installed during prior ownership, and the current owner replaced the air-conditioning compressor. Temperature readings from the under-dashboard air-conditioning unit are provided in the gallery.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with 5k-rpm redline, and auxiliary instrumentation is arranged across the upper dash. Under 74k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, approximately 500 of which were added by the seller.

A replacement 4.2L XK inline-six from an earlier XKE was installed in 2004 and features a triple SU carburetors with a RoW factory-style air cleaner housing as well as a Bill Terry ‘Cat Claw’ performance head. A set of polished headers are installed and feed into a stainless-steel exhaust system, and the finned cam covers have been polished. In preparation for sale the car received a replacement battery and an oil and filter change.

Records from the prior owner are included and reportedly total more than $100k CAD from the late 1990s-early 2000s refurbishment.
