This 1971 Jaguar XKE is a Series II roadster that was purchased new by the current owner in 1970 while stationed in Germany after the completion of his tour of duty in Vietnam. The car was ordered through Nemet Auto International under the military overseas purchase program and is finished in Regency Red with a black convertible top over a black leather interior. Power is provided by a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. This Series II roadster is now offered on dealer consignment in Naples, Florida, with purchase documentation, service records, and a clean Vermont title in the current owner’s name.

The body is finished in Regency Red and features chrome bumpers, side mirrors, and door caps. The selling dealer notes that the right front fender and left rear quarter panel were repainted to correct scratches. Chrome 15″ wire wheels feature earless Jaguar-branded spinners and wear 205/70 Michelin Energy MXV4 tires. The car is equipped with a black soft top and matching boot cover.

The seats are trimmed in black leather, and equipment includes a wood-rimmed steering wheel, a polished emergency brake handle, a Motorola AM/FM radio, and a leather-wrapped shift knob.

Smiths instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for voltage, oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 46k miles.

The 4.2-liter inline-six is equipped with dual carburetors and is paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Both the engine and transmission were rebuilt by Restoration & Performance Motorcars in Vergennes, Vermont, in February 2019. Parts replaced at that time included the timing chains, chain guides, gaskets, seals, and driveshaft U-joints. The clutch assembly was also rebuilt and balanced. The engine stamping 7R14177-9 matches the engine number listed on the chassis plate and in the original sales documents.

Corrosion is noted under the hood and underneath the car.

Records documenting the current owner’s purchase of the include this Nemet Auto International Application for Reservation of European Car showing a total price of $4,491.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
