This 1971 Jaguar XKE is a Series II roadster finished in white with a Biscuit interior and powered by a 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. A refurbishment begun by the previous owner in 1994 was completed following the seller’s purchase of the car in 2015, and is said to have included refinishing the subframe, repainting the exterior, replacing portions of the interior, rebuilding the carburetors, installing a stainless-steel exhaust system, updating the ignition, cooling, braking and suspension components, and more as described below. This XKE is offered with reference manuals and service books, receipts, spare parts, a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.
Delivered from the factory in Fawn, the car was refinished in its current white during prior ownership according to the seller, who notes the subframe was refinished prior to the car’s purchase in 2015. The replacement convertible top was sourced from GAHH Automotive. Additional features include a tan soft top boot, chrome-finished bumpers with guards, and a trunk-mounted Armco luggage rack. The seller notes the hood and left door require adjustment, and the windows do not fully seal with the top.
Chrome-finished 15” wire wheels secured with short-eared knock-offs wear 205/75 Mastercraft whitewall tires fitted during current ownership. The system four-wheel disc braking system was serviced with a rebuilt master cylinder and front and rear calipers, as well as replacement of the rotors, pads, reaction valve, and stainless-steel piston-equipped calipers. Suspension updates are said to include replacement of the following components:
Tie rod ends and ball joints
Lower U-joint
Rear mounts
Rubber boots, gaiters, bushings
Components within the rear suspension cage
Cabin finishes include replacement Biscuit upholstery fitted in place of the factory Cinnamon trim, and matching Wilton carpets are fitted over a layer of insulation. The dashboard pad was replaced during prior ownership, and further additions are said to include replacements of the boot floor panel, shift knob, rear-view mirror, and sun visors, as well as the instrument panel and interior lighting. A Bluetooth-compatible Retrosound stereo is housed within the center stack that was also reconditioned by the seller, who notes the seat recliner mechanisms require rebuilding.
The Lempert steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and a five-digit odometer showing just under 30k miles, approximately 300 of which have been added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown. The seller notes clock, choke light, door locks, and three dash panel lights are inoperative.
The 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six features twin Stromberg carburetors and was factory rated at 246 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Maintenance is said to have included refurbishing the fuel tank, performing a spin-on oil filter conversion, rebuilding the shift linkage, distributor, and carburetors, installing a PerTronix ignition, Bell stainless-steel exhaust system, CoolCat aluminum radiator, and eight-blade cooling fan, and replacement of the following components:
Cylinder head studs
Engine and transmission mounts
Exhaust manifold gasket
Fuel pump (inline unit)
Wiring harnesses
Ignition coil (40k-volt)
Ignition wires and spark plugs
Cooling system hoses and belts
Starter (high-torque gear reduction unit)
Clutch master cylinder and clutch housing oil seal
Battery
Differential seals
Differential rebuild
Results from a May 2021 compression check are included in the gallery below.
Additional photos are presented in the gallery below showing the suspension, chassis, and driveline, as well as corrosion on portions of the mechanical components.
Annotated photos taken during various stages of the refurbishment are also presented in the gallery, along with a service summary provided by the seller.
The Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate lists the factory colors and component numbers, as well as initial distribution through British Leyland in New York following its production in September 1970. The certificate lists the engine number as 8R 14449-H, while the engine block and chassis plate lists the sequence as 7R 14449-H.
