I purchased the vehicle in Nov 2005, a magnificent restoration, it made its first publc appearance for quite some time at the Tasmanian Jag National Concours, Easter 2009, but was not entered in the concours, but was awarded the Ian Cummins National Trophy for the best presented car not in the concours event. The car now resides in Williamstown in Victoria Australia..... cheers Denis

This car was sold new through Brysons in Sydney, Australia, having been despatched from the works on 28 July 1961, the same date as 850086 was despatched to Brysons in Melbourne. 850085 was sold new to the Sydney motor mower company Victa Limited, when Gary Richardson traded in his XK150 S DHC (T827360DN) on the E Type. These were the first two E Types sold new in Australia. See "The Jaguar XK in Australia", page 21.

Our vendor describes this 1961 Jaguar E-type Series 1 roadster as “undoubtedly the most significant E-type in Australia”, and it’s hard to argue with that. This is the first E-type ever sold in this country, and one of just 81 built to the original production specification. What’s more it has impeccable provenance and has been superbly restored to a painstaking level of accuracy. This E-type’s story began with its production at the Jaguar works on 28 July 1961, built with the flat floor and external bonnet catch of all early specification cars which are so sought after by serious collectors today. Arriving at Bryson Industries (Sydney), it was used as the Sydney launch car, before being sold to first owner Gary Richardson of Victa Lawnmowers, who traded in his Jaguar XK150 S drophead. It also became the first E-type to be road tested in Australia, by the late (& legendary) David McKay for Modern Motor magazine. Subsequently, this E-type passed through seven other owners, along the way twice being repainted red from its original cream, and at one stage bronze. These owners included Sydney car dealer Reg Phillips and Victor Waterhouse, who had the E-type restored twice, before our vendor took ownership in December 2006. By then this Series 1 roadster was back in its original cream over red leather, with a black soft top and chrome wire wheels. It had had a ground-up restoration which was as accurate as humanly possible – few early cars retain so many original parts – no doubt at immense expense, and it presented superbly when coming into the vendor’s ownership, as it still does today. Little wonder then that it won Ian Cummins Best Presented trophy at the 2010 National Jaguar Rally in Tasmania, along with various state and national Concours D-Elegance titles, and was twice shown at Motorclassica. The Series 1 roadster’s Project ZP537/24 engine was also rebuilt by Adriatic Motors in 2011. Now indicating 12,441 miles (at the time of cataloguing) and meticulously maintained by Jaguar expert Graeme Lord, this very special E-type is being offered complete with original tools, jack, literature and even the original Bryson keyring. Superb, significant, authentic and highly collectible on the world market, this 1961 Jaguar E-type Series 1 roadster is the undoubted star of our May Auction. Previously on Victorian club registration, the 1961 Jaguar E-type Series 1 roadster is being offered for sale here unregistered.
