This car is UK registered WWC22. It originally was the demonstrator model for Henlys Of Chelmsford. Though Built in June 62 it was not regisrered till Feb 63. I have owned this car since 1983,

I owned this car for quite some time, but the rust in the body was just too much and eventually I sold it for £400 I think in the late seventies.

It was sold to me by a guy in Blackheath and already had oversills fitted.

I fitted the 4.2 rocker covers to the 3.8 mill.

Did love it though and assumed it had long gone to Jaguar Heaven.

Would love to see the car again, as (sadly) when I owned it I did not take any photos.

By coincidence in the last couple of months I had to drive a couple of fully restored ones, which was the first time in around 30 years I had been in one. Although I had been in a replica, but it was not the same at all.

For about £200,000 one can buy a new one E Type, which is built using a replica body, and the latest Jaguar technology. Have been in one, which was very nice.

At the time I did all the mechanical work. This included major tasks, such as dropping the rear subframe, in order to change the handbrake pads.

I removed the engine on occasions. One time was for replacement of the main gearbox shaft (cost then £30) as the first gear was chipped. The gearbox itself though I left to professionals, as much setting up is required when rebuilding.

Problems with the gearbox seem to be caused by no synchromesh between neutral and first, and ( I seem to recall) first and second gears. Clearly a design fault.

I had all major brightwork re-chromed. The company that did that are still in existance and produce out of this world results, although it costs and one has to wait depending on their workload.

Regarding the comment about the £200,000 E Type built using a replica body, I'm curious to know if they are made from fibreglass? I ask this as my dad and I (who owns a Wildcat E Type replica) broke down in it recently down a country lane in Parbold, near Wigan. Co-incidentally, a chap came out of his stone cottage and just happened to say that his neighbour had an E Type. I questioned him further and he said that it was an export from the US, was black, had a 4.2 ltr engine, and strangley, he said it was fibreglass, but said it was a real E Type. I never saw the car. He could've been mistaken about the fibreglass of course.

He didn't know what series it was, apart from that it wasn't a convertible. Unless it is either a Challenger or JPR Wildcat replica (both fibreglass) I don't know of any 'real' E Types that are made from fibreglass. It could've been an Eagle E Type but unlikely. There's no record of an E Type in that area on this site that have been listed, but it's unlikely that every E Type owner is going to list their car on a database. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Hi Darren,
to the best of my knowledge, there was no fibreglass E-type, other than one with a replica body.
Although one could purchase fibreglass body parts such as bonnet, doors etc.
I tried these doors, but they were a disappointment, and I did not use.
Problem is they were thicker, in order to provide the required strength. This was clearly visible at the edges such that the body line was incorrect. Also there was no drain tube from the front drip tray, which was asking for trouble..
At the time I did not investigate the body material on the £200.000 version. But thinking about it now, feel it was metal as the complete vehicle was just so perfect.
