Original UK registration "755 PBJ" also briefly carried "7300 HP" (2004-2008); and "807 NPA" (2008) until export?

Owner: Nigel Atkinson

Hello Jaguar owners, I've been an E Type (XKE) fan since 1976 (aged 6) when I saw my first one (a black series 1 2+2) in a car park in Western-super-mare, Somerset England. It certainly made an impression on me but I had to wait another 24 years before I bought my first one - 860100, the 100th commercially produced RHD FHC (registered 1436WF). I currently own 860861, together with some other classics including an Aston Martin and MG. Classic cars are quite addictive!!!

Colour RED
Trim Colour BLACK
Chassis No 860861
Engine No R7298-8
Registration 755 PBJ

M.O.T
This is a genuine right hand drive Jaguar 3.8 'E' Type fixed head coupe and it has been with its previous owner for over eight years. We are informed that the car is in very good order throughout and it is painted in Carmen Red with Black interior trim.
Apparently the engine and the transmission perform as they should but we are informed that due to the car having been stored in a private collection for many years the regulator will need some attention. The car comes with wire wheels and the Moss four speed gearbox and the valuable private registration number - 755 PBJ.

I am the current custodian of the vehicle. It has been advertised by Woodmanton at £18950 previously. It has just received a brand new bonnet. In addition to the bodywork £12,000 has recently been spent on the mechanics including engine overhaul, cooling and suspension upgrades. Looks and drives very well, just driven it round Sothern England and Wales (June 2005). Currently contenplating fitting a getrag 5 speed box in place of the original Moss unit.

Subsequent to the posted photographs being taken, I have also replaced the incorrect series 2 rear numberplate and tailpipes (seen in photographs) with correct Series 1 items.

Nigel, we're neighbours, although I don't know exactly where you are. My 'E' is 1E 75339. Look me up in the local phone book and give me a ring for a chat perhaps? (don't want to put hpone number on here). There are no 'N' Atkinsons in Buxton according to the book but there are Atkinsons in Milton Court and on Macc Road so I'll see if I can get hold of you.

Regards, Peter

Hello Peter, I'm afraid I'm not in Buxton. Indeed, I'm not sure why this site says the car is in Buxton (not my doing), apart from a short spell for sale at Woodmanton Classics (Bromyard, Herefordshire) in 2004 860861 has spent most of the last 5 years in Wiltshire, where it is at present, having a cosworth 5 speed box fitted. The nearest it has been to Buxton was when I drove it to Derbyshire in June 2005. The car is currently registered to my address in Berkshire. Regards, Nigel

Have viewed this car previously. Looks good from a distance (and in photos), but on closer inspection the paintwork is poor and microblistering. The bodywork shows eveidence of patched repairs, bubbling rust and bulging bits of filler visible in many places. Typical E-Type!

It is curently still for sale at same dealer, with an asking price of £24000. (Presumably this reflects the fact that it was originally factory registered and has done a documented total of 57,000 miles)?

Sellers description as follows: "Manual 5 speed, 57,000 miles, Carmen Red. These early cars are getting harder to find!!! Matching numbers and original UK Car. Has been subject to much expenditure over the last few years which include a new bonnet, Engine work, Coopercraft brakes, 5 speed gearbox plus a host of other body and mechanical work.(Over £30000 expenditure).Has also sported a factory registration number for a while! The 5 speed gearbox makes this car very enjoyable.Great driving car which is all up together and ready to enjoy for the summer".

Car was at auction in '08
www.classicauctions.co.uk/pictures.php

Auction description:
1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Coupe
Estimate: SOLD for £20075
Registration No: 807 NPA
Chassis No: 860861
Engine No: R7298-9
CC: 3781
Colour: Red
Trim Colour: Black
MOT: 03/12/08

Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good overall" condition. Reportedly showing "three former keepers on its V5C Registration Document", '807 NPA' is further understood to be "a UK car with matching chassis and engine numbers". Boasting Coopercraft brakes, the E-type was apparently treated to an engine overhaul by Mike & Graham Reeder of North Newnton, Wiltshire some 3,000 miles ago (while, the same firm are also said to have been responsible for fitting its Borg Warner T5 five-speed manual gearbox). Summed up by the seller as "an excellent driving early car with good gearbox and brakes", its current MOT certificate remains valid until December 2008.

I was the third owner of the vehicle (until January 2008). A couple of people have emailed me about the car and asked me about its history and condition, (presumably as it is 'on the market' again).

For information and to avoid any misunderstanding, the original "works" style registration of "7300 HP" was put on the car by me in 2004. Although an original works registration, it was not original to this particular car, which has no known works association and was originally registered as "755 PBJ" in Suffolk, January 1963,

The original regsitration number of 755 PBJ (as confirmed by the JDT Heritage Certificate) is currently available to go back on the car if required.

The car was restored in the 1980s but no record of the restoration came with the vehicle other than what was reported at the 1997 auction. There was insufficient history with the vehicle to authenticate the mileage.

The work I had done on the car during my ownership was mechanical work in an attempt to make it useable on a daily basis. This included upgraded Coopercraft brakes, T5 gearbox, cooling upgrades etc. The car drove very well after these upgrades.

The bodywork of the car appeared reasonably sound, although it did receive localised repairs to MOT standard. A new bonnet was also fitted, but was poorly resprayed by the bodyshop resulting in microblistering as somebody mentioned above.

I would describe the car as being in very good overall mechanical condition with fair bodywork, which would benefit from improvement in some areas.

I hope the above information is of assistance and clears up any confusion.

I viewed this car at auction. Regardless of the amount of expenditure on mechanical items, £20,000+ must be a record price at auction for a Series 1 car requiring extensive bodywork restoration? They haven't been making this sort of money since around 1989 at the height of classic car speculation!
