Owner: Simon Crispe

since I was a child, I've loved great sports cars that even a Martian would recognise as special compared to mere A to B transportation. For almost as long, I've enjoying discovering how they work and how to fix them. My first nut and bolt rebuilt was when I was 15 years old and I'm hooked. My E is the 5th car I've restored from shell up. I also have a 61 Daimler SP250 built by Jaguar just 5 days after the E Type and I've owned that twice in 37 years and rebuilt it twice as well.

Seen on eBay. Did not reach reserve at high bid of $21K. Seller's description:

You are bidding on a 1961 Jaguar XKE Convertible Outside Bonnet Latch automobile. This is a very early car #29. I realize numbers are very important to some of you so here they are: Chassis #875029, Body #R1053, Engine #R1062-9, Gear Box #EB-178JS. The Head is stamped R1062-9. The Block is cast #23-3-61. This is a 72 Spoke Wire Wheel car, White Paint, Black Interior. Outside Bonnet Latch, Flat Floor with welded louvers. It just doesn't get any better than this!! The 29th left hand Drive car built. This car is in Nice Condition, runs and drives well, brakes rebuilt, original (aluminum) radiator included with the car. More modern and reliable replacement radiator is now fitted on the car for dependability. The old aluminum goes with it though for Originality Sake. Engine area is not detailed but rather set up for driving. The car shows 79,000 plus miles on the odometer. Interior is black and in nice shape The aluminum on the dash is the correct brushed circular pattern. Dull finish. Everything works on the dash. The car was redone 7 or 8 years ago with new top, body work, tires, rims and paint. This is a driver and not a show car.

1/12/05 additional information received on this car, now located in Scotland:
A 1961 E-Type roadster, the 29th left hand drive car made, chassis 875029. I would describe the car as in “un restored condition” but is a very sound, original and usable car with no rust.

The car has its original engine, gearbox and rear axle and all in good condition, not show.

I believe all the body panels are original.

Paintwork is good, again not show, I would think it has been painted at some stage in its life, it has some marks on the tonneau section where it has a hard top (no longer with the car).

There are many features peculiar only to the very first 40 or 50 E-types made, this car seems to have managed to retain most if not all of these features.

Items like the Butler number plate lights, door top chromes, welded bonnet louvers, outside bonnet catches, smooth sump, bonnet mounting studs, thin boot lid hinges, early steering wheel, body number tags on bulkhead and many more have all remained intact.
The price on the car is £40,000.

Additional info from Scotland vendor:
Bought from a private collector in Nebraska called Tom Merrick whom had owned it for about 5 years, the previous owner to him being another private collector called James Kirschbaum in Colorado who I understand had it for some period of time.

The radiator and fan have been replaced for upgraded items but the originals are there.

According to Scotland vendor the car is "cream, Very original car, engine compartment needs detailing, runs and drives nicely."

Delighted to have acquired this unbelievably original and unrestored car from Craig McWhirter in Scotland; now it is en route to Dubai to join a Daimler SP250 Dart made by Jaguar 5 days later. I'm going top nee lots of help and advice as I start this challenge to sensitively rennovate without destroying the amazing originality.

As you can see, I've made some progress on the rebuild of this lovely old car.for those of you who have noted the sacrilege of the RHD conversion, this is because I will be using this car in New Zealand when I return there one day. However, I am also restoring, cataloging and retaining all the original LHD components and building a case that they will all be stored in to go with the car for a relatively simple conversion back in the future.

Update April 2014: Here are the the first pics of E Type 875029's interior and soft top rebuild well under way at Jaguar restorers and automotive magicians, Classic Motor Cars in Bridgnorth, Shropshire...the rebuild that I started in 2010 is nearing an end and hopefully it will be back in Dubai soon!!

The restoration process of 875029 draws to an end in Shropshire, UK with the clever/lucky people at Classic Motor Cars giving my precious E a good shake down drive of 75 miles around the Clee Hills. I'm SO jealous! They found a few minor issues, mostly from my mistakes in the re-assembly back here in Dubai, but nothing of major difficulty to correct and only one replacement part needed. All good and cannot wait till I visit them early next month to take delivery!!

2014-07-08 14:39:58 | Simon Crispe writes:

The car is back in my Garage in Dubai, awaiting some cooler weather. I want to extend a huge thank you to Tim Griffin and Nick Goldthorp and their team of fantastic enthusiast specialists who really have done the most superb job on the finishing of my car including Phil Turley, Pete Sanders, Ian Ryder, Tom Hampton, Tom Wright, Tom Smallman, Colin Howell and Wayne Smallman. Well done indeed guys...I am one very happy customer!

Based on the certificate the 875029 is a left hand drive, the pictures from 2015 are shown a right hand drive.
What is right?

2015-07-09 18:19:57 | Michael DeBacker writes:

875029 is an early left hand chassis number. The car was converted to RHD at some point (the brake & clutch reservoirs are mounted in position for a RHD car). I believe some countries require the car to be converted to RHD before it can be registered in that country.

Dear Peter, Michael and GB, Thanks for your interest in my special car. If you read the thread above, you will see my comments posted on 26 July 2013 regarding the RHD conversions a that I have restored all the original LHD parts I personally removed and I am making a presentation case for them to accompany the car at shows. I have ensured every part has been retained and of course many parts are just from one side to the other. for example the pedal box is the original that reduces to the factory apertures on either side. I bought a correct set of RHD pedals which have a different bend angle and kept the original LHD items. The main wiring harness is the correct black with blue flecks part for LHD cars. I have carefully and entirely reversibly connected the all black RHD dash loom to the main loom, with sub looms made up to suit the RHD headlight dip switch, that would all be removed to allow the new black with blue fleck LHD dash loom to be installed. Having done the conversion myself in 3 weekends, I am certain it will be a simple job to revert to the original in a similar, perhaps even shorter time. However, the important point to note in my personal opinion (fully recognizing others may disagree) is that my LHD/RHD car is preserved intact with its entire compliment of original factory parts. It can also be driven enjoyably on any road, any where which after all is what owning one of these stunningly beautiful cars is all about...using it for what is was designed for...driving on the road! Best wishes to the growing group of followers of 875029! Simon

What is the last comment for?

I think every owner can do, whatever he wants. And if he remains all original parts; where is the issue?

@Simon - what a beautiful, nice and early car! I am jealous even being owner of 885017 and former owner of 875268 (had to sell the car to finance 017) and 875303 (Title and original VIN-Plate)....

2015-07-12 16:22:20 | Simon Crispe writes:

Hi Stefan, thanks very much for your very kind comments. My approach has always been to preserve and restore my car in a way that keeps the essence of the car, but keeping it useable on high days and holidays in NZ where I long to drive the car in its current format, but without ever losing the factory LHD parts. Every fixing is original and all body work is original factory metal except for half a cill and two small repair panels on the underside of the tail light "buckets" which were needed to be repaired. Rest assured the wooden case with all these parts will be photographed and posted on XKEData soon! Your cars are stunning and I am on the hunt for a really useable 64-67 4.2 coupe that my wife and I want to source in UK to tour around Europe next year!Best wishes,Simon

Much to its owner's surprise 875029 has managed to pass muster with the scrupulous judges of the 2016 Intermarque Concourse d'Elegance Masters Class held on 14 February at Auckland's Ellerslie Racecourse. It then went on to feature in a 5 page in depth article in the April 2016 Edition of the NZ Classic Car Magazine. 875029 picked up silverware at the 2017 New Zealand Internarque Concours D'Elegance at the Ellerslie race course held in Auckland on 12 February. This year it was joint winner of the team event entry by the NZ Jaguar Drivers Club, picking up the overall best car and scoring the most points in the event's 44 year history at 565 out of a possible 590 points. This result is tied equal with a 1956 Gullwing Mercedes that scored the same 565 points at the 42nd Intermarque in Feb 2015. Needless to say I was amazed at the car's success at NZ's premier Classic Car Show for a second consecutive year.

I am trying to find out more about 875029's previous owners in the USA. In 2007 (see above) RN wrote about the EJAG News Magazine Vol.10 edition No. 7 published 34 years ago in July1983. I was very pleased to find a copy of that exact magazine for sale on eBay and managed to buy it. I can now confidently verify what RN reported 10 years ago, is 100% correct. There is an advert for 875029 in the magazine as follows: 1961 XKE ROADSTER- Two tops, no rust. Number 875029 (29th car). Make offer, CONTACT: Carl Cover in Colorado I'm not really surprised given it is now 34 years ago, but try as I might can find no trace of Carl Cover in Colorado. Can anyone else out there shed any light on where Mr Cover lives or even if he is still alive? It is now a very long time ago that he sold his E Type!

875029 remains in concours condition and is currently waiting patiently for the 51st running of the Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d’Elegance and Classic Car Show on February 13, 2022 (Covid19 permitting). The car will be participating in the celebration of 100 years of the origins of Jaguar and a ten decades display of 30 special SS and Jaguar cars at the show.
