Father's car purchased in 1963 aka "Beloved." Served as his daily driver for over 25 years accumulating over 300,000 on original engine....must be a record. Three sisters raised in it. Middle daughter restored to concours grade and taking no prisoners for 2004.

Car No. 246 is an outside bonnet latch, flat bottom floor model. My father purchased it in 1963 as the second owner and drove it daily for over 25 years accumulating over 300,000 miles on its original engine.

Even though it was left to deteriorate for numerous years through the 80's and 90's, it coveted great centimental value in our family.

Middle daughter LaDing recently completed a 2 year restoration and debued 4th in the nation 2003 and 1st in its region. Looking for a successful 2004 show season.

Jaguar completed this early E-Type Roadster, chassis no. 875246, on July 18, 1961. Featuring the sought-after outside bonnet latches, flat floor and welded louvers, it left the factory as the 246th E-Type built. The new E-Type was equipped for the US market with left hand drive, and finished in a cream exterior color, trimmed in red hides and fitted with a black convertible top.

First sold in San Francisco on September 19, 1961, this early Roadster's first owner is recorded to have been Bay Area doctor V.H. Hollinger. The Jaguar would remain with Dr. Hollinger until 1963, when fellow San Francisco resident Mr. Leonard B. Iffla purchased the car. The E-Type served Mr. Iffla as a "daily driver" for many years, and is believed to have covered a staggering 300,000 miles during this time. The E-Type remained in the Bay Area with Mr. Iffla until 2001, when the car was passed on to his daughter in Houston, Texas. The car has remained in her ownership ever since, therefore it is a one-family owned car for over half a century.

Between 2001 and 2003, the E-Type underwent a comprehensive restoration, addressing both cosmetic and mechanical aspects of the car. The car was beautifully finished in the period correct and very classic combination of British Racing Green over a biscuit Connolly leather interior and a black top. A few thoughtful modernizations for enhanced usability were added, and these include include a new radiator and fan, electronic ignition and adjustable shock absorbers.

Once restoration was complete, the Jaguar was shown extensively throughout the southwestern United States and won multiple awards, including the 2004 JCNA Southwest Regional Championship and 2011 JCNA Driven National Championship. The car was also featured in The E-Type Magazine, in a piece that was honored as the Jaguar Club of North America article of the year in 2004. The original owner's manual, detailed receipts and photos of the restoration accompany the car, along with its Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate.

This numbers matching, California delivery, outside bonnet latch Series 1 E-Type is being offered from the same single-family ownership in which it has spent the last 50 years. Featuring the initial, purest iteration of the famed E-Type styling, this Roadster contains the prized features unique to the earliest examples produced, including the outside bonnet latches, welded louvers and flat floors. All of these features were later abandoned in the name of practicality, production costs and model development, and make this a particularly notable, rare example of one of the most iconic sports cars of the 1960s.

Would be surprised if this car sells for the estimate.

Simply because:
1.) Tyres are too small - wrong height
2.) Engine bay: is not in such a "top condition" as the maximum price winners were
3.) All in all car doesn't please so good as the other high price queens did

2015-01-02 22:52:54 | John S writes:

Stefan, I agree, notice the old 2003 engine photo then the newer one. Those exhaust manifolds should have been fixed. I will hazard a guess of 325, 000 plus commissions just because of the history and vin #... If it even sells, likely a higher reserve.

I remember seeing this car several times near Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco in the mid 1970's. This car has a great history, I hope the future owners appreciate it.

For sale : www.classicdriver.com/en/car/jaguar/e-type-si/1961/502292

Seller's description :
'OBL' chassis number 875246 retains all its major mechanical and body components, resulting from two important aspects of its provenance - spending the first fifty-four years in the California and Arizona climate, fifty-two of which were in the hands of a single family ownership, possibly the longest period of ownership of any early E-Type Jaguar. Remarkably, and indicative of the level of care given, for twenty-five years the car was used as the long-term owner's 'daily driver'!

Eventually undergoing a 'frame off' restoration over two years, the car's debut in 2003 on the highly competitive Jaguar USA concours circuit resulted in it achieving '1st' in the Region and '4th' in the Nation, scoring 99.98 points, the 0.02 no doubt resulting from the car being one of the very few driven to the event. Concours participation continued until 2011, during which it won multiple awards, including in the Jaguar Club of North America (JCNA) Southwest Regional Championship, and the JCNA Driven National Championship. When featured in the JCNA's E Type magazine in 2004, the content was honoured as their 'Article of the Year'. In the car's last JCNA concours participation in October 2011 it scored 99.98 points (see judging sheets in the History File). It also featured in a Stella Artois promotional film!

As 'driven' participation in many concours events was required, a key goal of the restoration was to ensure that the car was as roadworthy as when used for its 300,000 miles as a daily driver. Nonetheless, to ensure compatibility with current traffic conditions, the car has a larger radiator, electronic ignition, and adjustable shock absorbers, all of which are easily and inexpensively reversible should that be required.

'OBL' E Types are exceedingly rare; examples maintaining their original components, with impeccable provenance and unbroken history, are rarer still. 875246 is offered with tool kit, Shelley jack, Owners Handbook, hood cover, Heritage Certificate, JCNA Concours judging sheets, and history file.

Asking price : £295,000 ($394,124 or €334,968)

'OBL' chassis number 875246 retains all its major mechanical and body components, resulting from two important aspects of its provenance - spending the first fifty-four years in the California and Arizona climate, fifty-two of which were in the hands of a single family ownership, possibly the longest period of ownership of any early E-Type Jaguar. Nonetheless, to ensure compatibility with current traffic conditions, the car has a larger radiator, electronic ignition, and adjustable shock absorbers, all of which are easily and inexpensively reversible should that be required. Today, sufficient new parts are readily available to create a new E Type, armed only with the original engine and chassis number. Therefore, cars that pass close forensic inspection with their original parts are increasingly rare. This car recently underwent close inspection by a leading authority on Jaguar E Type heritage and was found to be remarkably original.

Recent market comparables include chassis 875143, as sold by Bonhams at their Goodwood Revival sale in September 2017 for £309,500 and chassis 875807 - a non OBL '61 Roadster - sold by RM Auctions for in excess of £500,000 in May 2017. These figures suggest that our car is very competitively priced at only £295,000.

Auction description:
British title
Chassis #875246
Engine # R 1372-9

- Same Californian family ownership for 52 years
- Top level restoration
- Matching numbers, extremely rare model
- Rare outside bonnet lock version

The car on offer has spent 52 years of its life in the hands of the same family from California! In 2003, the car benefitted from a professional chassis-up restoration of the highest quality, that preserved the originality of this outstanding car. Since then, the car has won numerous concours awards, including the highly competitive Jaguar USA concours, where it was awarded 99,98 points, 1st place in the region and 4th nationally. It was the subject of the 'Article of the Year' in the JNCA (Jaguar Club North America) E-Type magazine in 2004.
To make the car easier to drive in today's traffic, a larger radiator has been fitted as well as adjustable shock absorbers and electronic ignition. The car comes with its jack, original and complete toolkit, " Heritage " certificate and a cover. A file containing invoices, owner's manual and the judges' results from concours events it has taken part in, come with the car. Examples of the first series, with flat floor and outside bonnet lock, coming with transparent history and in this highly original condition are extremely rare these days, making this a real opportunity for marque enthusiasts.

Estimation 280 000 - 320 000 €
