Restoration Project

Our E-type is a first year production car that should be titled as a 1961. Cars entering California the first year were titled as 1962s. This is a very early car, number 305 produced off the line making this a highly collectible model to own. In addition, it has the very rare outside bonnet latches that were made in extremely limited numbers to the early production cars, making it a very unique model.

This E-type is partially apart on a dolly, some parts are in boxes while some are in the car. The front end has been removed and has been replaced with a temporary dolly. It has flat floors, a welded louvered bonnet, matching numbers, and is 98% complete. This car has been in an accident. The winning bidder should be someone willing to put in extra time to bring this car to the condition in deserves; as the body will require quite a bit of attention. This XKE is VERY worth while as a restoration project!

Please Note: One seat is missing, the pillar chrome by the windshield is missing along with the bottom chrome of the windshield. "

Info gathered with permission from: www.hendi.nl/xke/main.htm

875305 was advertised in the Apri1 1991 jaguar Quarterly. The description claimed it "needs restoration." In late 1993 it was again advertised in Jaguar World as being a "Genuine car with original engine and bonnet. California car but in need of total restoration.

I discovered some correspondence I had with the owner as of 1999. The car at that point need complete restoration. One interesting note was some typical Jaguar "dyslexia" in the engine number. The plate was stamped as above but the cylinder head was stamped 1431. The owner was in Torrence CA at that time.

Some years back October 1995 I had tentatively brought this car from a US dealer for customer here in Albany Australia total cost at his doorstep $30,000 Australian dollars.

This 1961 Jaguar XKE Series I roadster is a flat-floor example with outside bonnet latches that was originally distributed through Jaguar Cars of New York and is said to have resided in Italy before undergoing refurbishment in the Netherlands between 2017 and 2022. The refurbishment was reportedly commissioned by the previous owner and completed by the selling dealer upon their acquisition of the car in 2020. The body has been refinished in Cream with a black soft top over replacement red leather upholstery. Power comes from a rebuilt 3.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission, and equipment includes 15″ wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, split chrome bumpers, a vented bonnet with welded louvers and outside latches, triple windshield wipers, carpeted floor mats, textured aluminum interior trim, and a height-adjustable rearview mirror. This XKE is now offered in the Netherlands with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, recent service records, a spare wheel, a tool kit, and Dutch a registration document in the selling dealer’s name.

The body was finished in Cream when new, and the refurbishment is said to have included stripping the body and frame, performing metal repairs, and repainting the body and frame. The car is equipped with split chrome bumpers and bright trim as well as glass headlight covers, triple windshield wipers, dual central exhaust outlets, a black soft top with a matching boot cover, and a vented bonnet with welded louvers and outside latches.

Chrome 15” knock-off wire wheels wear 185-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A spare wheel and tire are stored in the trunk along with a tool kit. Stopping power comes from four-wheel disc brakes.

The cabin was trimmed in red leather from the factory and was reportedly re-trimmed with upholstery sourced from BAS in England. Textured aluminum trims the dashboard and center console, and equipment includes carpeted floor mats, a chrome parking-brake handle, a padded dashboard, and a height-adjustable rearview mirror.

The steering wheel features an aluminum structure with a wood rim and frames a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and an analog clock, while centrally-mounted instrumentation includes gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, amperage, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 82k miles, approximately 150 of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The 3.8-liter inline-six was reportedly rebuilt as part of the refurbishment and features triple SU side-draft carburetors. Factory output was rated at 265 horsepower.

The cylinder head stamp reads R1431-9, while the engine number stamped on the chassis plate and noted on the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate reads R1413-9.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Production Record Trace Certificate lists the car’s original colors and identification numbers as well as the build and dispatch dates. Recent service records are also included in the sale.

Seller's description:

Classic Open, Sales & Service, Netherlands

Jaguar E-type 3.8 Litre OTS, year 1961.

Colour cream white (Old English white) combined with a red leather interior, red carpet and a black mohair soft-top. This is a “matching numbers” car, a certificate from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust is present to confirm this.

This gorgeous Jaguar E-Type was built in July 1961 and delivered a few months later to its first owner in California USA. This Jaguar E-type series 1 OTS (Open Two-Seater, also named “roadster” in the USA) is an early example which can be recognized by the OBL “outside bonnet latches”.

Only 386 E-type OTS cars were built to the early specifications, this car is production number 305.

The current Dutch owner imported the car from Italy in 2017. In the period 2017 – 2021 the automobile was extensively restored and overhauled to factory original specifications.

Where possible the original parts were kept and restored, worn parts were renewed.
