Note the comments below, the car at this auction has been determined by the seller as not 876234, the record is left here as a reference.

Important news on the VIN for this car.

It has been brought to our attention that there is another E Type with the same chassis number. We believe the other car to be the original car that was delivered new from the Jaguar factory with chassis number 876234 as it still has the correct matching numbers on the engine, gearbox and bonnet. The other car has been off the road and in restoration for over 30 years and has not been registered so has fallen out of the DMV database. The other car is in pieces in California. It does not have the same body number R2526 but we have been informed and we believe that the Jaguar Factory records are incorrect and although they list our body number to be the correct number for this chassis number, it is in fact incorrectly recorded in their archives.

The car that we are currently auctioning was titled based on the information on the reproduction date plate which was taken directly from the Jaguar Trust Heritage certificate and is therefore incorrect.

Although the body of our car is obviously that of an early flat floor car which would have been issued a chassis number that must have been very close numerically to 876234, it may be impossible to establish the correct chassis number as it cannot be crossed checked against the recorded body number as the factory records appear to be incorrect. There seems to be a discrepancy of several numbers in the recording of the body numbers on the date plates in relationship to those recorded by the factory in their archives.

We will ask the DMV to title our car on its original body number R2526 or on an assigned VIN.

When the title issue is resolved we will be again be able to offer the car for sale.

Thanks to everyone for all the bids and commentary and we hope to have it back it back on the market soon.

As information and photos do not pertain to the car that is believed to be the original car chassis #876234, we request that all the photos and information posted in 2023 from the BAT auction are removed from the record. The red car that we were trying to sell will be assigned a VIN by DMV and we'll be offering it for sale after that.

Thanks

Hi

Please remove all information on this car from the BAT auction as Winning Makes has requested.

Return the listing to the posted information as of 2007 when I registered my car here.

This registry, using a remaining body tag number on the BAT car tub, is where the BAT car obtained all the information/numbers to reproduce the data plate on the BAT car, approach the Jaguar Heritage Trust and the California DMV.

The BAT car body tag number is the same number used to identify my car on my car's original data plate. This body number is also hand written on the back of the both my car's dash panels including the interior red color and date of manufacture of my car. There is clearly factory errors here with body numbers which can not be used exclusively for identification. Especially VIN numbers.

I was told more than once by Winning Makes that the BAT car originally had an assigned VIN number from Oregon.

My car has the original data plate, original VIN numbered picture frame, original numbered engine and matching numbered head, original numbered transmission, original radiator, original bonnet and per above the original numbered dash components.

I also have a vin verified California title and registration from 1980.

Thanks

This is clearly a factory mix up in period, an unfortunate error that is well known to have occurred on multiple cars and well documented, particularly on the early 3.8 cars. It is possible, more than likely, that the car chassis numbered above with the other cars body number stamped on the chassis plate has the other cars body tag. Would it not help all concerned if the owner of this car disclosed to the BAT car that number. They can both then approach the Heritage trust and ask for a letter confirming the mix up and allow the true chassis number of the BAT car to be known and therefore titled with its correct number. We all want these cars to survive as they should, restoring them correctly is everybody's interest. I'm not suggesting swapping body tags as that is part of the history BTW.
