This is a friends car I am selling for him. The car has had an older restoration (about 7 years). It has only 1440 miles since. It runs and drives well. Once warm it is smooth and fast. This car blows no smoke! The interior is very nice. Seats are leather and in fine condition. Dash is nice as well. All gauges work except temp gauge. Lights work fine. Top is excelllent. Carpet is good. Body is straight. Paint is just good due to age. I would rate it a six or seven. It shines beautiful. Up close you see some flaws. The motor also looks great with a nice patina. This car was restored to enjoy. Tires have great tread just the white walls show some cracking. With some TLC this car can become a much higher dollar car.

PRIVATE OWNER
This beautiful automobile is a very early production model. It is one of the first few hundred 3.8 liter left hand drive roadsters built in early 1962 with the sunken foot wells in the floors. It was built on February 26, 1962 which was less than 8 months after the first retail delivery of the infamous 1961 (hood latch) cars. As you may or may not be aware the E type was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show in March of 1961. A beautiful 1963 Opalescent Blue E type roadster is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Most Jaguar enthusiasts consider the 3.8 liter E types as the most pure sports car of the entire 14 year run of this breed. This is a true matching numbers car with all numbers on the number plate (data plate) matching the actual numbers on the back of the engine camchain area, engine number on the block above the oil filter, body number on the left hand side of the bulk head in the trunk and the transmission and vehicle chassis number. An original Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, which is part of the documentation for this vehicle, confirms these numbers to be the actual numbers when the car was built. This E type was originally an Opalescent Blue with blue leather interior (yes just like the one currently displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in NY). It was professionally restored in the correct Jaguar color for that year, Carmen Red with biscuit interior. Paint code Glasurit #JAG-303. Unfortunately the only maintenance records and receipts I possess are from my own ownership which is just under two years. However, prior to my purchase at my expense, I had my mechanic go through the car and a priority list of things to be done to make the car "street worthy" was compiled and completed. This car has been well sorted mechanically and drives wonderfully.

The car is very solid with no rust or dents evident on any body parts. The floors, sills, and rockers are solid with no signs of corrosion or rust. I’m told by the previous owner, who owned the car for four years, that he purchased it from an enthusiast from Marietta, GA and that the restoration work was performed in the mid 1990’s at a cost of over $40,000. A copy of that letter to me is part of the cars documentation. There is no documentation for who did or actually what was done to the car at that time, however, it certainly appears to have been done by a professional.

The Jag Roadster is a quality automobile. Now it is not without fault, it is 44 years old, and is not perfect…

* A few minor scratches.
* Leaks some oil on the garage floor.
* Clock does not work.
* Radio works intermittently.
* True mileage unknown.

But …It is one of the nicest and prettiest XKE series one 3.8 liter roadsters that you will find that drives as great as this car does.

I offer my observations and opinions for your review. Please understand that I purchased the car in its current physical condition and sorted it out mechanically to be the excellent driving machine it currently is.

MY OVERVIEW OF THE RESTORATION
The car’s paint is very shiny, with a high luster and shows beautifully. I would say an 8 ½ - 9 out of 10. There are some minor scratches but nothing serious (see photos on website). No cracking or hazing or bubbling of the paint. It seems very realistic to me that it is about 10 years old or possibly newer.

The gaps and body panels fit extremely well. The inside of the trunk and all the engine frame rails were all painted Carmen Red. My personal opinion is that the engine must have been removed because the frame rails are well painted and I don’t think that could have been done with the engine in the car. Also I see no signs of over spray on the engine or engine parts. If the engine was taken out was the engine and drive train rebuilt? I can not make the claim that it was or was not. I will say however that the engine runs extremely well, doesn’t smoke or burn oil, and has excellent compression. The clutch has a good feel and the car shifts well. The Moss box transmission has a non synchromesh first gear and was somewhat antiquated even back then but works great. The car’s odometer currently reads 3,640 and read 1,200 miles when I purchased the car.

The original aluminum finned radiator was replaced with a correct brass replacement unit. The front shocks still have the label Woodheads and I don’t think they are the original shocks, they are replacements. The chrome bumpers, Amco bars, headlight surrounds, windshield pilers, all Jaguar chrome lettering, and light housings are all in excellent to mint condition. The windshield glass, windows, and glass over the headlights are all in perfect condition. The wire wheels are in very good condition and have been tuned. I think they are the original wheels. The floors, sills, rockers, are in great condition and I think they are replacements. They are totally solid. The exhaust system is solid with no exhaust leaks. I believe it is fair to say that the system is about 10 years old. The soft top and rear window are in excellent condition, no tears or rips. The interior is a 9 – 9 ½ out of 10. It definitely was professionally done including the steering wheel and shows extremely well. If the interior was done 10 years ago my observation is that it was either very well cared for or the car was not driven that much. One point I would like to make, the restorer covered the console in biscuit leather rather than the original circular patterned aluminum. It looks fantastic and I really love the look. However, being somewhat of a purist I purchased an all new correct pattern aluminum dash kit from SG Barratts just so I would have it if I decided to change and make the car look totally original. The kit goes with the car and the installation should not be a major event if the buyer so decides to change it. Also included is the chrome strip for the top of each door on the interior.These are brand new and also were purchased from SG Barratts.

The rubber moldings around the doors, sills, trunk, bumpers, and bonnet have certainly been replaced. They are in excellent condition. The entire restoration, in my opinion, was done professionally. The current state of the engine and drive train is sound and the true mileage is unknown. The current mileage is 3,640 as I stated earlier.

The DOT code on the tires when I purchased the car showed that they were manufactured in 1993. Although they looked new and had plenty of tread I purchased 5 new radial whitewall tires anyway (Broadway Classics by Goodyear). After all I drive the car and my main focus is safety and dependability especially when you are driving a classic car 75 miles or more from home.

WORK PERFORMED
During my ownership this is some of the work that I either did myself or had performed by my mechanic. I have documentation for most of this work.

· Replaced all five tires and tubes and had the wire wheels tuned and speed balanced.

· Replaced all coolant hoses, header tank, correct thermostat, flushed the system and added all new coolant.

· Installed a new cool cat fan and motor designed for the series 1 E type and added a new fan thermostat (the original single blade fan and motor worked fine and are included with the car). The previous owner had an electric fan installed in front of the radiator which can be manually controlled by a switch under the dash. I left this in as an emergency precaution but could easily be removed without affecting the originality of the car. The car runs cool and never comes close to overheating.

· Replaced front and rear brake hoses and front and rear disc brake pads. Brakes bled and all new fluid was added.

· Replaced both master brake cylinders. (I have the original Dunlops and they are included with the car.) Replaced the brake reservoir and level indicator.

· Engine timing, carburetor rebuilding and tuning, points, plugs, wires, all belts, replaced all engine, transmission and rear end fluids, lubrication of all suspension parts.

· New fuel lines and a new fuel tank sump.
· Jaguar installed seat belt attachment points into the E types body shell in January ’62 seat belts were optional at that time. I installed seat belts using these factory anchoring points.

· Replaced the master clutch cylinder. (The original Dunlop cylinder goes with the car.)

I’m sure I might be forgetting something but you get the idea.

DRIVABLILITY AND CONDITION
This car has been very well sorted and drives extremely well. I have owned four E types so I have learned to practice preventive maintenance to keep the car in working order. It handles and stops very well and the 3.8 liter engine has that glorious Jaguar sound. Press the button and she fires right up. A fresh oil change was just completed 2/8/06 and the car is ready to go and be enjoyed. All gauges, lights, and signals work properly except for the clock. As I mentioned earlier the car does leak some oil on the garage floor .

I now own this car. I was the high bidder in 2008 and bought the car directly from the dealer shortly after the auction ended. The car was cosmetically quite nice but close inspection revealed a list of issues needing to be resolved. I decided on a rolling restoration so it was used regularly in Houston until mid 2011 when I put it into storage whilst working out of the country.
