Fresh Nut and Both Restoration with Many Mechanical Upgrades

1964 Jaguar XKE 3.8 Roadster
s/n 879969, Engine No. RA2865-9
British Racing Green with Black Leather Interior

This early Series I XKE 3.8 Roadster achieves the ideal balance between originality and modernization. With just 2,155 miles logged since a nut and bolt restoration which included a complete, competition quality engine rebuild, installation of a Borg-Warner 5 speed all synchro gearbox with overdrive 5th, suspension rebuild with H.D. Torsion bars and sway bars and new Bilstein gas shocks, oversized Willwood alloy front brake calipers, a new fuel tank and fuel pump, and a recessed drivers seat to accommodate a taller driver, this car appears fresh and beautiful, and drives like a new car. It is a rust free example with California black plates.

The restoration was both cosmetic and mechanical. Both the interior and exterior have been refinished. The repaint was a reasonably high quality job in what appears to be the original color. The body is extremely straight with excellent bonnet, door and trunk gaps. The chrome looks to have been restored sometime before the repaint, and is straight and complete, but shows minor pitting. The car sits on nice chrome wire wheels with near new Vredestein tires. The window glass is excellent throughout, and the black canvas top is in like-new condition. This car is fitted with a chrome luggage rack.

The interior has been re trimmed in very high quality upholstery. The seats have been done in soft leather, while the dash and door panels have been redone in matching vinyl. The carpets are like new. All the gauges, knobs, and switches are original. A new, stronger, and very tasteful Moto-Lita wood rimmed steering wheel has been installed.

The engine compartment is clean and very well presented, although not detailed for show. The often missing window washer bottle remains with this car. The underside is straight, solid, and absolutely rust free. The floors have been professionally replaced. The trunk is fully restored and trimmed in tan vinyl.

When the engine was rebuilt high torque cams by Elgin were installed, along with stainless steel valves in bronze guides with tappet guide clamp brackets. Modified crankshaft seals were used. The exhaust headers were ceramic coated in flat black. An alternator conversion has replaced the often problematic generator system, and the car is fitted with an electronic ignition.

The car drives beautifully. The recessed seating allows a tall driver to actually look through the windscreen rather than over it. The car will easily fit a driver up to about 6ft 4 in. The engine starts easily, sounds great, and makes excellent power right from the low rpm range. The brakes are excellent, and the 5 speed gearbox with overdrive allows for quiet, low rpm freeway cruising. From the outside, it looks like every other XKE roadster, but behind the wheel, this car is something special.

With the car comes the original gearbox, top boot, spare wire wheel with tire, jack and jack bag, and hammer, a front bumper oval, and an aftermarket shop manual.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
