A beautiful and competitive ‘Semi Lightweight’ E-Type built to FIA specifications, completed by well-known historic racing specialist Gary Pearson in early 2022 at a cost of some £350,000.

Its engine is a 3.8-litre straight-six with an aluminium block, fed by triple Weber carburettors, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.

Since completion, it has only been used in a few test sessions and races, but has proved to be a fast and capable example; coming second in the Snetterton Historic 200 in June, and leading the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring for several laps in August. The car has also competed at the Silverstone Classic.

The car was built up to the current competition specification using the identity of a late 1963 left-hand-drive E-Type Series 1 Roadster, chassis 880293.

It is eligible for a wide range of events across CSCC, HSCC, Jaguar Classic Challenge, Peter Auto, and the GT & Sports Car Cup, among others.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

A superbly built ‘Semi Lightweight’ competition car crafted by the renowned Gary Pearson (Pearsons Engineering Ltd); this E-Type Roadster features a steel tub, aluminium bonnet and doors, as well as an aluminium engine block.

The car was constructed between late 2021 and early 2022, at a total cost of some £350,000, with invoices available on file.

This left-hand-drive car is finished in the iconic hue of British Racing Green, and rides on a set of centre-lock cast alloy wheels with three-eared knock-off hubs.

Attention to detail is visible throughout the build, including elements such as the drilled lightweight boot hinges. At the rear is an FIA specification fuel cell, with flip-top filler cap protruding through the boot lid.

The interior is almost entirely stripped out, with a full roll cage, a pair of bucket seats with Willans harnesses, a simple dashboard with original Veglia dials and toggle switches, and a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel.

The odometer indicates 16,043 miles, but this is not the post-build mileage. It has only been used in a few races since completion.

Accompanying the car are numerous invoices pertaining to the car’s build and subsequent preparation, test sessions, and race maintenance; plus HTP papers and road registration.

CONDITION

A couple of body repairs have been required since completion, but there has been no significant damage.

The paintwork is reported to be in very good overall condition for a historic racing car, with some minor stone chips around the front end, and some chipped paint behind the rear wheels.

Likewise, the interior is still in good order following the recent build. The driver’s seat is taped and shows wear commensurate with race use, but the co-driver seat is in great shape, and the rest of the interior also presents very well.

The seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults.

SERVICE HISTORY

It has been prepared and maintained fastidiously during its competition use through 2022, with invoices showing regular engine leakdown tests, engine oil changes, new differential oil and brake fluid, Endless brake pads, and frequent adjustments and tuning.

Prior to competition at Donington, a driver air cooling vent was installed; while in advance of the Silverstone test in May, the chassis was thoroughly cleaned and inspected, and the brakes, suspension, and wheel alignments were all checked and adjusted where needed.

Leading into the Snetterton Historic 200, the wheel bearings were re-shimmed, the front hubs and discs were stripped and fitted with Endless long-distance brake pads, and a minor cam cover leak was rectified.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
