When it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type amazed everyone with its huge curvaceous bonnet and sleek interior. The E-Type offered performance to match its looks, thanks to the twin-cam inline six which had made the company famous on road and track; here in 3.8-litre guise, its 265 bhp output took the car to 240 kph.

This car left the factory on 9 March 1964 and was delivered to J A Connor through the Jaguar dealership in New York, finished in Opalescent Bronze with a black interior and matching hood. The Jaguar Heritage Trust has confirmed that it still has its original engine block, the head being unnumbered. From 2016–2017, a substantial restoration was carried out by the specialist in English cars Prestige Garage at Vence, and this is documented in a photo album. The specification chosen enhances the lines of the roadster, with Gunmetal paintwork and a black hood, and contrasting red leather upholstery, carpets and mats (with rubber overmats). For your weekend getaways, there is a pair of fitted suitcases in cognac-coloured leather. During the restoration, some significant improvements were made: a five-speed all-synchro gearbox, power steering, improved brakes, electronic ignition and a ‘Big Bore’ exhaust manifold.

It only remains for you to pack the fitted suitcases and take the wheel of this magnificent British ‘Big Cat’ to enjoy some memorable trips, with the peace of mind afforded by the improvements made to this example. As well as improving its reliability, the clever modifications to this car make it a true joy to drive.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
