    History

    1961 thru mid 1962 the early E Types had very distinctive features to the early XKE’s. Including flat floors, welded louvered bonnets, aluminum dash with center console and early style bucket seats. The early coupes also featured a slightly different shaped rear glass on the hatch door. All these features make it a very desirable XKE for the collector. This original, matching numbers Jaguar has not been molested or abused.

    Car Condition: Show Driver Level

    The car has just completed a comprehensive nut and bolt restoration to show level. The restoration was filmed and cataloged as it was being disassemble, carefully inspecting all of its components for the restoration process. The body was stripped to bare metal finishing and fitting on a rotisserie, doors, bonnet and boot lid fit to body, epoxy sealed and painted, color sanded and buffed all, new rubber, seals, grommets and gaskets, original trim and bright work re-plated, new leather seats, carpets, panels, dash, headliner, windshield, door glass, etc. Beautiful aluminum panels on the dash and console installed. The engine has been completely rebuilt including hot tank cleaning, machining, and magnafluxing with new pistons, timing chain, oil pump, bearings, turned the crank and the head was also rebuilt with new valves, new guides, new tensioners, new springs, as well as a new water pump, and freeze plugs. The fly wheel was resurfaced and a new clutch system was installed. New shift bushings were installed, the transmission was rebuilt including a new first gear syncro, new aluminum radiator, new heater tank, new knocks offs. The rear end was completely rebuilt.All systems were serviced, rebuilt or replaced as needed. A new exhaust system and a new battery were also installed. The instruments were rebuilt and a complete new wire harness was included. The vehicle then received a full vehicle detail inside and out. This is a very well sorted high end Show Jaguar Series I XKE. A DVD of the restoration process accompanies this Jaguar.

    This special matching-numbers Bronze over Red second-year production E-Type Coupe has been rotisserie-restored by our team of master craftsmen here at Classic Showcase. Every nut and bolt on this XKE is proper and correct, as well as all components and systems on the car. This E-Type offers many of the sought-after features like flat floors and welded louvers that are evident in early examples and is truly one of the most gorgeous and collectible E-Types we have ever restored.

    The E-Type has competed and been shown at some of the most prestigious events in North America and is a certified JCNA National Champion. It has won (10) first-place 100-point achievements in JCNA concours events, as well as numerous 99.9+ first place awards. It has always been meticulously and accurately maintained, and is in pristine condition, both aesthetically, and mechanically now. Since its show-level restoration, the XKE has been driven 48 test miles - only to keep it in perfect roadworthy condition; furthermore, the Coupe has lived in a climate-controlled environment, and looks just as fresh today, as the day its restoration was completed. In addition, the car has only been driven with Avgas fuel to keep it pure and running properly.     Classic Showcase performed a complete and comprehensive rotisserie restoration to this XKE to that of a Show-level, sparing no expense, taking no shortcuts paying maximum attention to detail. The Coupe was completely disassembled, stripped to bare metal, with the vehicle body fully worked, metal finished, and lead applied as needed, with all body parts, chrome, and rubber fitted to the car. It was primered, sealed, and painted in base coat, then clear coated. It was finally color sanded and buffed to the beautiful finish you see today. Note that all parts were individually painted in the booth. All systems have been gone through and were restored and replaced as necessary, using the best quality parts. The engine, transmission, rear end, and suspension, as well as all other systems including the hydraulic, fuel, cooling, and electrical were fully restored; the XKE’s original aluminum radiator was restored as well and is operational in the car today. The car has also received correct hardware, clamps, new rubber, grommets and seals, and we have also sourced an original Triplex date-coded etched windscreen, with all of the remaining Triplex glass being original. Our master trimmers created, fit, and installed a completely new interior in the Coupe in all of the proper and correct materials. The instruments were completely rebuilt, the wire harness was replaced, a new battery was installed, and all brite work was fitted and re-plated to a show level. As with all of our early E-Type show-level restorations, very strict attention to detail was given to this 1962 Series 1 example.     This 1962 Jaguar XKE is a Series I coupe that was built on December 21, 1961 and distributed in the US through Jaguar Cars of New York. The car underwent a bare-metal restoration by the selling dealer, Classic Showcase of Oceanside, California before being acquired approximately 12 years ago by the current owner. Work included a repaint in the factory shade of Bronze, reupholstering the interior, and rebuilds of the numbers-matching 3.8-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission. Additional equipment includes triple SU carburetors, glass headlight covers, four-wheel disc brakes, and chrome wire knock-off wheels. This Series I coupe has received a number of 100-point judging results in JCNA Concours events and achieved the title of JCNA National Champion. It is now being offered on consignment by the selling dealer in Oceanside, California with a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, JCNA judging sheets, manufacturer’s literature, a refurbished tool kit, restoration photos, and a clean Ohio title.

    The car was taken to bare metal, placed on a rotisserie, and received a two-stage repaint in its factory shade of Bronze following the completion of body work as needed. Exterior features include a louvered hood, Lucas headlights with glass covers, and central exhaust outlets.

    Chrome 15” wire wheels are secured with two-eared knock-off spinners and mounted with Firestone tires. A full-size spare is found in the trunk, and the car rides on four-wheel independent suspension. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rears.

    The cabin was trimmed in red leather from the factory and has been reupholstered with matching door panels, carpets, and a black dashboard and floor mats. Equipment includes toggle switches for vehicle functions, pop-out rear vent windows, and an upholstered cargo area with rubber-lined rails.

    A wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel with an E-Type center cap sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock. A quartet of auxiliary instrumentation in the center stack includes an ammeter, along with displays for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer was reset during the refurbishment and shows just over 50 miles, though total mileage is unknown.

    The 3.8-liter inline-six has been rebuilt and features triple SU carburetors along with polished valve covers. The selling dealer notes that the radiator cap has been drilled, the hydraulic system was recently serviced, and the radiator refurbished.

    Engine block and cylinder head stamping R3321-9 matches the number stamped on the chassis plate and displayed on the Heritage Trust certificate.

    Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, which was also rebuilt during the restoration.

    The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate displays the factory colors and identification numbers, along with a December 21, 1961 completion date.

    According to its JDHT Certificate, this E-Type was built on December 21, 1961, finished in Bronze over a Red interior, and dispatched on January 10, 1962 to Jaguar Cars in New York. Early service records accompanying the car from as far back as 1962 indicate its first owner was Larry Kelder of West Shokan, New York, who owned the car until at least 1973. By 2008, the Jaguar was in the possession of the noted specialists at Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California. A comprehensive restoration was undertaken that spared no expense or effort to bring this very uniquely specified E-Type to the highest level.

    In 2009, the Jaguar was purchased by the consignor, who fell for the uncommon qualities of this car and its impeccable appearance. The E-Type was immediately thrust into duty as a top-tier concours car, and is accompanied by 87 pages of documentation and judging sheets from JCNA concours events across the country. On 10 occasions the E-Type received perfect 100-point scores, and it was consistently improved over the years, as documented in invoices on file. Notably, this car is fitted with a correct, but notoriously fragile, original aluminum radiator, and its cap has been modified to limit pressure in the cooling system. This radiator and cap should be replaced before the Jaguar is pressed into road use.
