Appeared this morning (4-5-18) in Bringatrailer:
This 1961 XKE coupe is a left-hand drive Series 1 race car that was reportedly assembled from a bare tub in 1980. Power comes from a Terry Larsen-built 3.8L straight-six with forged pistons, race cams, a ported aluminum head, and triple Weber carburetors, while shifting is via a Borg-Warner 5-speed gearbox. The car was used for SVRA competition according to an included logbook, and took first place at an HSR West event according to a prior owner. This XKE was featured in a March 2018 Speedhunters article and is offered for sale by the selling dealer on behalf of its owner with receipts, racing documents, and a clean California title.
Bodywork includes a fiberglass bonnet and is finished in British Racing Green, which is said to show bumps and bruises consistent with competition use. Three VARA logbooks with race entries from 1986-2003 are included in the sale.
D-type knock-off steel wheels are 6″ wide up front and 7″ in the rear, with all wrapped in Hoosier racing slicks. A single-piece racing bucket is fitted and driver protection is from a custom roll cage with four-point harnesses, a fire bottle, and an electrical kill switch.
Instrumentation includes a large Smiths tachometer as well as later-model VDO gauges for oil pressure and temperature, fuel level, and water temperature. A series of toggle switches controls major functions such as the fuel pump, ignition, and electric fans. No odometer is present, and the engine has reportedly run 108 hours since a 2000 rebuild.
The 3.8L straight-six was reportedly assembled by Jaguar restorer Terry Larsen in 2000. According to a writeup from a former owner, the build included a .040″ overbore, Cosworth pistons, and Carillo rods along with race cams and big valves for the ported cylinder head. Induction is from triple Weber carburetors, while exhaust is through a custom 3-2-1 header to side-exit piping. Per the seller, a dyno run in May 2003 produced 266 horsepower to the rear wheels.
A 15-gallon Fuel Safe racing cell is fitted in the trunk and feeds the engine through braided hoses with AN fittings. Additional modifications include an aluminum flywheel, Tilton clutch, aluminum radiator, external oil cooler, and MSD ignition system.
Shifting is through a Borg-Warner 5-speed gearbox, and power is transmitted to the wheels via a limited-slip differential with a 4.09:1 gear ratio. Additional running gear consists of Koni coilover suspension and four-wheel disc brakes upgraded with vented rotors.
