Legende et Passion
Monte Carlo, Monaco
Monday 21st May 2007
Lot 260
1963 Jaguar E Type Coupe

Registration no: n/a
Chassis no: 00888599
Estimate: €85,000-92,000

By 1961 Jaguar had ceased to take part in motor racing but, ever mindful of the value of this form of publicity, they earmarked the first seven production cars to be specially prepared for racing according to Factory Project ZP 537/24, a written instruction from chief designer Claude Bailly to the production department. The seven competition E-Types were mildly modified to incorporate, amongst numerous changes, a 9:1 compression ratio, lightened flywheel, competition clutch and a close ratio gearbox. These cars were sold to well known owners who would race them, with two going to John Coombs, two to Tommy Sopwiths's Equipe Endeavour, two to the newly formed Peter Berry Racing and the seventh to Sir Gawaine Baillie. The latter was a well known and successful driver of Jaguar MK I and 2 saloons and, later, Ford Galaxies.

This 1963 Jaguar 3.8 E-Type has been completely rebuilt as a racing car by German racing team Derichs. After shot-blasting, the monocoque was strengthened and any parts were replaced when necessary. Reported to be free of any accident damage, in 2005 and 2006 it was very successfully campaigned in the FIA Historic European GT Championship and in the latter year finished fourth in the GTS 12 class and eighth overall. The car comes with both FIA and German historic road registration papers and represents a rare opportunity to purchase a successful racing E-Type.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
