Taking the lines of the more sporting-inclined Coupe and creating a more useful E-type for the family, the 2+2 (as its name suggested) offered more space and greater versatility without compromising performance or handling. This model continues to offer a sensible way into ownership as this 1969 example suggests. Starting life in left-hand drive form it has been converted to right-hand drive, and the original automatic transmission replaced with a five-speed manual by model specialist Lanes. Bodywork – re-painted in traditional solid dark green – brings low-key subtlety and the metalwork is in very good order – no replacement panels were required during the re-paint our vendor notes. Wheel arches are corrosion-free, shut lines straight and tight and the valances equally smart. Under the bonnet all is clean and tidy. This car's black interior maintains the theme of the external condition: the seats have little sign of wear or fatigue, and the dashboard and door cards are highly presentable. Supplied with a recently passed MoT test, this sensibly modified E-type is truly worthy of serious consideration.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
