An eight page article in the Oct. 2003 issue of Octane featured this very car. A quote from the article says "Chassis no. 850006is now owned by American enthusiast Bernie Carl and is the car Gregor Fisken and Emmanuele Pirro drove to victory at the Goodwood Reival in 2001."

Info gathered with permission from: www.hendi.nl/xke/main.htm
850006 (lightweight number 1) was delivered new to John Coombs, and was one of the seven ZP537124 modified cars. It was driven first by Roy Salvadori and later Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham and others. It is said to have held at various times the registrations 4 WPD, BUY 1, and BUY 12. over time it was modified into more of a racing car, the modifications including an aluminium body shell, hence making it a prototype for the lightweight aluminium-bodied competition E-types. The car is reportedly in England, held by the same owner who has had it since the 1960s, and being restored to competition specs.

Car is mentioned in Nov, 06 Jaguar Journal (JCNA publication). Confirms factory documentation built the car for John Coombs, engine number R1015. States it was Pearl Grey, registration BUY 1.

Basically the same info as above was documented in Sept '07 issue of "The E-Type" magazine. The car was Pearl Grey and registered BUY 1.

For the record and from the original log book. The registration BUY 1 was reassigned to the car from the MK 11 demonstrator on the 27th April 1961 at a cost of £5. On the 3rd November 1961 BUY 1 was reassigned again to another car and 4 WPD was assigned ( date stamped as the 4th December 1961), again at a cost of £5. At no time was the car ever registered BUY 12. Interesting to note that the car raced at Oulton Park on the 16th April as BUY 1 before formally taking that number. The story goes that both cars where driven to the circuit for the race practice with BUY 1 arriving with the new owner first, therefore claiming to be the first E-type ever delivered to a customer, with Mr Coombs being that first customer!

The car is alive and well and racing once again. It was at Goodwood last weekend. It was fabulous to see it once again as I have many memories of it being raced in the sixties alongside my Father's car

I knew Gordon in 1978 he was my chief eng working with P&o ferries
He had the lightweight then at the time he was in his late fifties and heavily into horby oo
I also knew bob speake who was a top mechanic and specialized in ferraris and classics served his time working for Gordon at his jag dealership at 5 barred gate Preston
In 1988 met with bob at a motor cycle trial he was asking about Gordon but at the time I'd parted companies 5 years previously
I asked about the lightweight and he told me this story
It was stored in a mill in Preston covered in old carpets
At the time classic car market was going crazy and consortium of London business men approached bob and asked him to buy the jag on their behalf and go up to 800k bob was t o be on a 10 percent bonus
He called up and spoke with Gordon and made him the offer
Gordon told him under no terms was the lightweight for sale and put the phone down on him
I chuckled yes Gordon was a true car nut having supported jag racing at leman as a mechanic he was well known around the true Giants cloth hat brigade in lancs like Harry Radcliffe etc great characters
