RM auction, 3/10/2001 Amelia Island, FL lot #3. Sports Car Market report:

Engine a bit smoky on start-up. Older restoration still shows well but not national prize level at this point. Over $70,000 claimed in restoration costs. Automatic gearbox a minus. Sold at no reserve.

For sale at European Locators. Ad reads:

"VIN: UD1S23009. Old English White with red leather and only 54,000 miles with factory air conditioning, wire wheels and good to excellent chrome. This striking V-12 automatic is an exceptionally well maintained example of a true classic that is driven regularly in the sunny South. The paint and interior are perfect and the mechanicals are excellent. The current owner describes it as a great driver with excellent paint and a strong engine. Maintenance has been regular and thorough with a new Fan Tail 4 pipe exhaust, brakes, radiator and electric fans, ignition switch, cooling hoses, electronic ignition, distributor, wires and plugs all added within the last 12 months. It's chassis is completely rust free and it runs like a new automobile. Cared for by Mike Collins of European Classic Auto, all of the maintenance records are available. $31,000. "

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
